My favourite building is a wooden garden shed.
My second favourite, probably Heuston Station.
After that, the Central Bank in Dame Street.
(Only kidding about the last one.)

Yes, in the whole world! Although I've mostly been in Ireland so far.
I like the sheer simplicity and symmetry of a wooden garden shed.
In all seriousness (and I am frightened I might get beaten up for saying this), I do quite like the Centre du George Pompidou (from the photographs I've seen of it). It would be awful if all architecture was like that, but as a novelty it's quite appealing to me.

As to beauty or form? Beauty - architecture that focuses on form becomes useless in a far shorter time span than anything built with beauty in mind.

I should perhaps say that the brutalist towers in my avatar picture are not an endorsement of brutalist architecture. Just an expression of my localism-- it is after all the classic image of Ballymun!
Hopefully I have now earned a cigarette before execution. (I don't smoke, but it seems like a good time to start.)

Modern architecture is one of the few things that can push me over the line from being a conservative to a reactionary!
As to the cigarette - of course you've be permitted one. After all, traditions must be upheld.

I admit I'm trolling on my own forum, but today I learned about Googie architecture, and I must admit I quite like it. I like how unique and eye-catching it is, and redolent of a particular period and place. That is, America in the fifties. Surely it's OK to have the occasional building like this? |

When you have lived long enough in a modern and largely characterless city like I have you really can't feel over enthusiastic about those sort of buildings. I received a postcard from Dublin a few weeks ago of the Samuel Beckett Bridge. All the adjacent riverfront buildings were so modern, it could almost have been Perth. I know-we can't live in the past, we need a certain about of comfort. I'm aware personally of how unliveable a lot of old buildings were in Dublin. Progress is needed. Remembering the movie ONCE... Looking as a semi-outsider... They subconsciously made Dublin look romantic (and "magical" , if you like) even the tiny flat that Markéta's character lived in, which perhaps wouldn't be magical at all and not as comfy as the modern Balymun flats of course. A balance of blending-in is always needed. Perth had had modern building styles since the 60s, another thing I've noticed is how quickly that sort of architecture ages. Glass skyscrapers are lovely when they're gleaming and new but........... |

I just like architecture that's interesting to look at, whether that's Georgian, Victorian or post-modern. Drab buildings are the worst.
