I've deleted the posts of two more anti-Catholic trolls. I presume they're different people. Again, it's not because they're criticising the Catholic Church. Serious criticism of the Catholic Church (or anyone else) is OK. Just trying to pick a fight will get you deleted, though. You missed your calling as grand inquisitor. Hammer of heretics!!

Ha.
Seriously, I don't think people like that add anything. They're just looking for antagonism, not discussion.

I agree and it is important to keep order. I try not to feed trolls but I have a weakness in needling them too. Mea culpa.

So I'm now deleting posts by unregistered visitors on a near-daily basis. Most of them are anti-Catholic trolls. I've no idea if it's one troll, a group of trolls, or...goodness knows what.
Anyway, this is why posts are usually deleted:
1) They're rude and aggressive. If you're looking for a fight, you can go somewhere else. Pretty much any opinion can be expressed here, as long as it's done politely.
2) They're not interested in discussion, only in assertion. This is probably true of all of us to some extent, but most people make some kind of effort at seeing the other person's point of view and...not acting like a jackass.
3) They're monomaniacal. It's funny, this seems true of the whole range of trolls, even trolls with diametrically opposed views. They have their single consuming obsession, whether it's the evil of the Catholic Church or the evil of everything EXCEPT the Catholic Church, and they drag it into every discussion.
I have no idea if these people are serious or just having a laugh. I rather hope it's the latter. It's depressing to think it's the former.

You could also take it as a tribute that the forum is getting more traffic.
There may come a point where you may have to forbid 'guests' from commenting and require everyone to register - maybe even having to answer a few set questions on why they want to join. Trolls probably wouldn't be bothered going through that much hassle just to be snarks.

Yes, both those thoughts had occurred to me!
I'm reluctant to disallow guests as some regulars would no longer be able to post. However, I might have to do this if the problem continues. My current solution is to ban the IP address immediately, and not even to give the pathetic trolls the satisfaction of acknowledging them. Obviously, they can keep up their activities from another computer, but it will at least be a filter.

I suppose it's difficult to tell who's at the other end- I know a priest who, for a laugh last week, decided to put a profile on a catholic-dating site without his real name or a photo. He had two answers within minutes.

I'm really enjoying the County Associations thread. Just before it went up I was thinking of doing that for the streets of Dublin. To know the streets of the Dublin inner city and its environs is to pass the initiation into being part of the city - a Dubliner. Its a sort of source of pride, humanity, manliness amongst its people but that doesn't quite express it. I noticed this in my family who grew up in the inner city. Capel St, Francis St, the Nass Road are all mystical entities.

My favourite pub, Nealon's, is there. I'd heard it was closing some time ago and I was very pleased to see it was still open and apparently the same (I didn't go in but, from the opposide side of the street, my view inside seemed to suggest it was unchanged). I love the atmosphere of Capel Street, maybe because it's so narrow and swerving, it gives it a medieval feel. I suppose I should hate it given the sex shops, but there you go. I wouldn't have a great knowledge of Dublin streets, unfortunately.

Maolsheachlann just a thought......In the Speakeasy section do you think it would be good to set up a thread devoted to the miscellaneous? This would stop new threads being opened where people just want to mention something briefly, ask for help with something etc. I find when a forum with this software keeps creating threads at a good rate it becomes harder to navigate and puts people off. A Misc thread might trim that a bit and I think its fine if people want to have a short conversation in there too. If there's already such a thread please point me to its halls. I feel I want to dwell there sometimes.

I agree with all that, irishconfederate. I will do that straight away. I will sticky it, too.
