But I actually do admire Merkel for speaking in her German tongue to international audiences, however global her viewpoint in other ways Agreed. Well, I didn't know she did that, but I admire her for it now I do know.

Francis will reportedly beatify seven Eastern-rite Catholic Bishops martyred during the communist era during his visit to Romania starting May 31st. The first was in the 1950s, the last, Cardinal Hossu in 1970,a few years before my own birth, so.... relatively close in time. Mention was made that the GreekCatholic church in that country dates from the Hapsburg conquest of Transylvania, after which one Bishop decided on union with Rome but continuation of traditions(as the seven martyrs were Bishops it's likely that all these were celibate, whatever the norm there is)

Sydney Catholic archdiocese reportedly marked Vocations Day by sponsoring an American Sister to visit and lecture. Sr Mary Gianna Thornby,'Disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ' was a virtual student survivor of the 1999 Columbine HighSchool massacre, who for reasons unknown had felt the need to go home shortly before the shooting. She found Christianity later, eventually joining this Franciscan-based congregation

An interesting piece from a travel writer, published in a (secular) paper today : "A lump of limestone towering over the western side of Palermo...(Monte Pellegrino) is the Sicilian answer to the Rock of Gibraltar...we arrive at the most visited cave of all- the sanctuary of Saint Rosalia. It's dedicated to a young woman from Palermo who in the 12th century was born into a Norman noble family and rejected her aristocratic roots to live as a teenage hermit. Legend has it that when a plague struck Palermo in 1624 Rosalia reappeared first to a sick woman, then to a hunter, whom she told where her remains could be found. He was tasked with bringing her bones back to Palermo and carrying them in a procession through the city. After this the plague ended Rosalia was venerated as patron of Palermo and she's still honoured each July with a celebration that includes a fireworks display and parade (sic) where her relics and statue are carried in a chariot. On September 4,the day it's believed she died (in AD1166 apparently) pilgrims continue the tradition of walking barefoot up Monte Pellegrino to pay homage to Rosalia's cave. Some devotees even drop to their knees to climb the 80 or so steps that leads up to the baroque style that frames it. After paying our respects inside the dimly lit chamber, which has several busts of Rosalia,we head across the other side of the mountain..." As History goes, the mention of the era of Norman lordship of Sicily is interesting. Adding to the unusualness of this Saint, neither religious nor laywoman,I also read once that there was evidence of Rosalia being an Eastern-rite Catholic, which some regions of Sicily had still generally been in her time.

John Henry Newman is to be canonized in Rome on October 13th. This coincides with the controversial Amazonian Synod. No doubt the usual toadies will stretch credulity to breaking point by claiming Newman would be delighted with all the current chaotic mess making.

John Henry Newman is to be canonized in Rome on October 13th. This coincides with the controversial Amazonian Synod. No doubt the usual toadies will stretch credulity to breaking point by claiming Newman would be delighted with all the current chaotic mess making. I have heard people make this claim and, furthermore, that he would approve of today's society and it's making of a golden calf out of the individual conscience. I'd imagine myself that,as with all the Church's giants,we'd have to understand the generation he speaks to. He'd hardly be speaking pragmatically about early church precedents or primacy of conscience to a world already obsessed with this emphasis. His conversion didn't prevent Randall Davidson of Winchester, later archbishop of Canterbury reciting Lead Kindly Light to the dying Queen Victoria moments before her death. "When Davidson came to the words 'And with the morn those angel faces smile which I have loved long since and lost a while' Victoria's changed expression showed that she understood their meaning at last" (cf Spoto, fall of the house of Windsor)

"Good news" may not the best description for this, but I find myself thinking once again, a few mornings ago, how pleased I am that provincial newspapers continue to flourish in Ireland. I like to stand in Eason's and see all the titles that are still published, with their often quaint and poetic titles. It seems surprising in our era of declining print sales.

It might be just that it evokes fuzzy childhood feelings, but I'd think of Eason's ongoing existence as good news in itself. Last week I saw a photo, which made it into a newspaper without scrutiny,of two kids posing in fancy dress as part of a 'book-week or -day',as Spiderman and Maleficent(who is really Disney's interpretation of the Sleeping Beauty villain.) I'm sure Disney books, etc have done much to encourage young readers, but didn't the photo highlight how the pop-cultural is winning over actual literature? Progressives not entirely happy either- I've noticed at least two much-publicised stories questioning Disneyland- one Latin American artist claiming that more special-needs characters are needed, others using objections towards an Afro-American Ariel to claim lack of character-diversity. While disabled characters may be admittedly scarce, the latter claim is ridiculous. For a start, Jungle Book is still said to be the inflation-adapted highest grossing cartoon ever. And then there's been Pocahontas, Mulan,Aladdin,Lilo,Tiana and Moana- besides which,1990s Ariel was a redhead, statistically more endangered than the above races and, according to Ed Sheeran, just as,or more often, bullied for appearance. Seeing someone the other day had dressed their child in Aristocats clothes- more popular in my day I'd have thought- made me wonder...twenty years ago of so there was much talk of boycotting Disney products due to exploitation of workers and sweatshop production. Does this not still happen or have people ceased caring? Or do carbon emissions occupy the thoughts of a perrenial protesting-class? It's been years since I've even heard anyone keeping tabs on Nike. Another thought that the mention of bookshops brought to mind was the case of an extremely nice and vibrant young fellow who has in recent years been diagnosed with a condition of sensitivity to modern screens- cannot use either mobile or internet and,I'm told by many who know him well, can't finish his degree as a result! (Chinese medicine apparently) I'm not sure whether he has exhausted all avenues, but I'm rather appalled for him at the inability of the university system to accommodate, not only considering the centuries that universities have predated 3Gs or 4Gs (or whatever Gs there are) but what of the constant talk of inclusivity and accessibility that we hear?

The death of the dictator Robert Mugabe marks the formal end of a terrible period for the people of Zimbabwae. Those old enough to remember may recall the hope and optimism that accompanied the revolutionary fighter Robert Mugabe as he became Prime minister of the former racist Rhodesia. He rapidly dashed hopes by slaughtering his tribal rivals with North Korean aid and by wrecking one of Africa's richest economies.
Mugabe was educated by Irish catholic missionaries but he appears to have been motivated more by Marxism, greed and a grasping lust for power.Africa has has more than her fair share of vicious and corrupt rulers before and after European colonialism.

If you're on Facebook, you should follow the page "Conservative Comeback Ireland". This was a wonderful recent post by the administrator Ben Scallan:
At a party last night I was talking to a good atheist friend of mine, and I cracked some joke about how we didn't see eye to eye on religion. My other friend beside me starts laughing, and says "Have you not heard?"
I look at the atheist guy, and he pulls a crucifix out of his shirt and proceeds to explain to me that he's come back to the faith for the first time since he was a kid, and that he was at Mass just earlier that day. "It's a journey, and there's a lot that I'm still making sense of, but it makes more sense than everything else."
It honestly made my night to hear, I was so overwhelmed with joy for him, and I am truly convinced there's a quiet revolution for God happening in this country and possibly across the whole world.
I'm a convert to the faith from Buddhism since I was 17. My life-long atheist mother is currently undergoing catechism to be baptised next year. My father has come back to it too. I went into a young male relative's room recently and saw a crucifix/holy water by his bed, and I can tell he's searching. I went to school with a Hindu Indian guy who has now come to the Christian faith, and I can name at least 10 people I know who went into college as atheists, saw the decadent hedonism of the World, and ended up going back to Church. I even spoke to a girl who was raised as a literal witch, an actual Wiccan, by two women, and has now been baptised (on the same day as me, no less) as a Catholic. Even GT, and Dave Cullen of Computing Forever, and loads of others have done videos showing their move towards God. It seems so unbelievably common.
These are just the ones we know about. Have no doubt that God is moving in the world. Our prayers do not fall on deaf ears, even when he seems to be quiet. Pray for further conversion across the world. - Ben

Finally .... Some one in Rome and sadly not a cleric .. removed 3 Paacamama goddess idols from a Church near the Vatican and dumped them in the river Tiber. No doubt this will be denounced from the usual quarters as racist or rigid .
It made my day. The video is on YouTube.

I think I saw mention yesterday that he also intends to censor his earlier music from now on. After a university lecturer of aboriginal ancestry this week declared a curse on anybody who henceforth will climb Uluru (previously Ayres Rock) it's a refreshing change to hear of something being censored for some reason not relating to offending minorities. (certainly racism can exist, the Bulgarian soccer fans may be a genuine case. Someone pointed out the interesting fact that, here,we're looking at a former communist nation where some post-iron curtain youth are obviously happy to nod, however unseriously,at the nazi-socialist concept. Obviously not enamoured with the current western model)
