Ronan Collins on RTE radio one continues Gay Byrnes tradition of playing Flowers of the rarest on the first of May. A little sentimental perhaps but a nice gesture all the same.

Funny thing is in his last years on Lyric FM he came across as an often cranky, uninhibited reactionary and critic of contemporary Ireland. For one who may not have known better, he would have appeared from that alone to have been a hidebound conservative.
I'm in London and heard the news on Tuesday. Afterwards as I was standing around waiting to meet someone an older lady approached me looking for money. Turned out she was 63, Irish, living in Kilburn most of her life, had recently lost her partner to alcoholism, was missing some front teeth, staying with her sister and so on. In spite of her woes, she still seemed lively and spirited. I mentioned Gay's death and she reminisced about having watched him when she was young. Not sure why, but it seemed an appropriate encounter having heard the sad news.

He also liked recommending his favourite books although he kept saying he was not going to give new books a plug. And then he would .
