Watched the Exorcist last night for Halloween 🎃. I had visitors who had never seen the movie before and laughed at all the scary bits.
I was very struck by the very positive portrayal of Catholic clergy in the film. The two main priests in the film die in the Exorcism in sacrificial service. The younger priest's faith crisis is treated with sensitivity and respect. At the very end the now cured Regan eyes the clerical colour of another priest.... She kisses him on the cheek in gratitude. A scene I could not imagine in a 2021 movie.

I went to see Kenneth Branaghs Belfast in the lovely Stella film theatre in Rathmines on Monday. Its a childhood depiction of 1970s Belfast which will no doubt annoy many social media republician patriots.
It features a young Protestant boy growing up in a mixed Belfast street where neighbours gather outside their front doors and where everyone knows everyone. I was very moved by the depiction of the grandparents played by Ciaran Hinds and Judy Dench. Movie watching is a prominent theme particularly cow boy films. As a 70s child myself I was enthralled by how the film captured many features of that decade that I had forgotten.
Beautifully filmed in black and white with an obligatory but appropriate sound track from the newly rehabilitated Van Morrison this is a movie well worth watching if only for the nostalgia buzz. Any one who has been a child will enjoy this.

I saw my second movie this year on Monday. It has been difficult to get back to normal pre covid habits.
The new Top Gun Maverick is great fun. If you like aircraft you will be transported into heaven for a few hours. Tom Cruise is a a very fresh 60 year old who returns to his 1980s role training elite US navy pilots . I think it's marginally better than the original which is a classic.
It is also refreshingly free of political correct nonsense and genuflections to the current herd of sacred cows that plague many contemporary films. Its good old fashioned heroic patriotism , comradery and lots of great flying . I loved it.

I watched Tar in the Dublin IFI last night. It's a beautifully filmed biopic about a highly successful female classical conducter who comes crashing down from her exalted status after a me too moment (or moments). I was tempted to leave this movie during the first 15 minutes but thankfully persevered.
It has several layers of possible meaning but is best seen I think as a haunting ghostly story of a human breaking down. There is a great scene were she tears into a social justice warrior student. Naturally this comes back to bite her on social media. My first movie outing of 2023. Recommended.

This is a sticky thread where people can write about films they saw in the cinema. I went to see Star Wars: the Last Jedi today. I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, I've only seen Revenge of the Sith out of the second trilogy, but I really enjoyed Rebel One so I was quite hopeful about the Last Jedi. And it didn't disappoint, but I wasn't blown away, either. In terms of plot, the series seems to simply recycle old ideas. I do like how the Star Wars series as a whole is decidedly mystical. The Force is an apparently spiritual reality which underlies the universe, and which seems to be the most powerful thing in the universe. I'm even rather surprised that so many millennials love Star Wars in spite of this. Star Wars was one of the first films I ever viewed and is a classic good versus evil saga dressed up in futuristic garb. I haven't watched the subsequent offerings yet but the latest movie appears to suffer from all the vices of 2018 - a strident arrogant feminism and a angsting self doubting masculine leadership in the guise of Luke Skywalker. I haven't seen it yet so maybe I am being rigid and judgemental...... Jonathan Pie has a good rant on the wokeness of starwars youtu.be/p9_bI789Gog
