Write-ups about museums are always interesting and I came across one about four of them today, listed together because of their topical unusual-ness,the Belgian Comic Strip Centre, Eroticism Museum Barcelona and Dublin's Irish Whiskey Museum(no mention that Jimi Hendrix and George Handel share a museum somewhere in England, which has to be the ultimate). The photos of an auditorium in the Museum of the History of Medicine, Paris seemed strangely dominated by religious images, mostly pre-Revolution from the looks of it, including at least one altar triptych. As there was no explanation, I'm assuming these were some of the intercessors that were more regularly invoked in time of illness, but obviously not the more-Germanic collection of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, as Martin of Tours is prominent(cutting away at his sable cloak- perhaps he disendorsed real animal furs?,good on him) and one seems to represent the Virgin, at least two seem to be medicant friars. Two male figures writhing in loincloths and arrows may be Sebastian, often invoked against plague; although at least one could represent Panteleon, early patron of doctors, sometimes depicted the same way. It would interest me to hear more about the information given to visitors- is mediaeval Christianity deemed backwards for seeking spiritual help? Given that Jews often used prayer, particularly the Psalms, as a method of dealing with pain (Christ's allusion to Ps22 on Calvary may reflect this), is it noted that Catholics' devotions were at the very least psychologically soothing? Do the friars' statues also represent early medical insight, which did in fact exist in monasteries. Are people like Hildegard represented at all? Something that strikes me is how the Christian vacuum has quickly been filled with everything else. How often do we hear mention of holistic health and healing?...or meditation for one's physical and mental health, usually referring to yoga, pilates, aromatherapy, incense sticks and Buddhas-here there and everywhere ,etc-ad-nauseum? While even clergy will react negatively to the slightly eccentric lady's ten-Hail-Marys-to-St.Jude, there may be a lot more wisdom in the ongoing need for the supernatural for wellbeing and today's people still seek it in other ways.

You're most welcome to participate, Ann.
Discussions don't usually happen in real time here, so it's not strange that you didn't catch many members online at the same time.

Are immigrant conservatives welcome here? Of course. Welcome. We have some emigrant contributors already so immigrants may add to the rich diversity!

Perfect. I have read a few posts about protecting Irish culture and immigrants and stuff, so wasn’t sure if I’d be welcome but I am glad I asked. What do you folks usually talk about? I am more centered towards anti political correctness and free speech rights. Once I educate myself about Irish politics and culture, I’d be able to contribute more to those conversations.

Everybody is welcome to the forum and no subject is out of bounds. Feel free to contribute whenever you like. Indeed, someone with a fresh perspective on Irish politics and culture would have much to contribute, so don't feel inhibited by how much or little you feel you know. As for what we talk about, the discussion is quite wide-ranging, I think.

I read today about a 111-year-old Confederate officer monument being removed in Charlottesville, something we're going to get used to,but one must spare a thought for American birdwatchers who must now train themselves to say thick-billed longspur rather than the former name McCown's longspur, named after a Confederate officer and possible slaveowner, who shot the first specimen known to caucasian man,no doubt a fall from grace also. Assuming rhynchophanes mccownii will stick unoffensively as the scientific classification. Thankyou Carl Linnaeus.

I read today monument being removed scientific classification. Thankyou Carl Linnaeus. Carl von Linné is one of the rare great men that stands quite safe in our society. His garden and statue in Uppsala was up for speculation during the discussions on global rioting. But so far no threats has been done. Perhaps his field of competence were too close to the "rational" enlighted minds. To become sufficiently suitable as a target to be marauded he would perhaps had have needed to be less common and likeable.

Is Google shadow-banning my blog, Irish Papist? I might be having delusions of grandeur. But when I googled it (which I always do when I want to post something), the first result was my Twitter account, the next was some article somewhere that uses the term "Irish papists", and the third was my blog but a post from several years ago. Up until now (for almost a decade) the homepage was always the first Google result. Maybe someone else could try it. Maybe it's a temporary aberration.

Still visible on the first page all the same. ;-)

A friend's daughter recently had her utube videos taken down from singing songs without copyright permission but they eventually allowed her to start her 'channel' again, which shows that peoples can be scrutinising
