As part of secularisation (2018 has seen its fair share) the state should ensure essential services like libraries are available 24/7! I expect Simon Harris and Clare Daly are working on the Toleration of Religions bill 2019 which will abolish Christmas and Easter holidays as offensive outdated papist relics.

A third of US Congresspersons are now catholics! Rejoice. The third most powerful office holder, the speaker, the venerable Nanci Pelosi is also a faithful daughter of the church.

It is expected Blessed Cardinal Newman will be canonised this year. I wonder will they perform the ceremony in England?

The first UCD of the lunch-time term that I attended had such a large congregation that, for a moment, I thought it must be a memorial Mass. But it wasn't. A very good turn-out of worshippers, most of them students. And a very devout atmosphere. I hope it continues.
My perception of the lunch-time in Mass in UCD is that congregations have been increasing rather than decreasing over the years I've attended it.
I wasn't receiving Communion this afternoon so I counted the communicants. Fifty-three, which I think is quite good.

Publications by the Missionary Sisters of St Peter Claver are usually full of good news, largely because the donations that the Congregation arranges are fairly 'hands on', with replies like 'thank you Sisters, we bought these vestments, from Lumbar, Cameroon'...'thank you Sisters, we've nearly finished the presbytery, from Musoma, Tanzania'...etc.. A piece I read yesterday about Uganda, however, shows that, amid all the growth in these places, they're not without problems like the West- but the bishops seem to be making a stand: "A June 2018 sex education programme created by the government will be rejected by Christian schools unless considerable revisions are made, say the Catholic Bishops of Uganda. 'Although a team of Catholic experts was consulted while the programme was being created their suggestions were substantially ignored in the final document'(said the Episcopal conference)" comment: not sure what a 'catholic(sex)expert' is, but they seem on-track "...'The information and life skills provided for upper level students are open to interpretation and practices which may prove contrary to Christian moral values.... Should [the National Sexual Education Framework] remain unchanged the Catholic Church in Uganda together with the Orthodox Church has decided that we shall not be able in conscience to have it introduced that taught in Christian founded schools'"
St Charles & the Ugandan Martyrs pray for them.
Post script, this may have been on Iona last year?, but in another publication this week, I read "October 4 2018, in a vote of 21>6, the town council approved a motion that aimed to make Verona 'a City in favour of life', which includes public funds to pro-life groups and encouraging women to place unplanned babies up for adoption rather than abort them.... In addition, Italy's minister for families and former vice-mayor of Verona,Lorenzo Fontana...has said he would work to further reduce the number of abortions in the country by allowing doctors more freedom in discouraging women from having abortions"

Good news indeed-- a glimmer of hope, anyway.

The Catholic archbishop of Suva, Fiji is taking a fairly strong stand towards his government's current education policy also, saying at one stage that the country's fifty or so Catholic schools may have to close as things are (government-funded, but, since 2016, with principals appointed by the government whether the appointees are Catholic or not- in a couple of cases apparently not). And one would imagine that there is much to lose on both sides... If the church-school system needed rebuilding on the island as a private sector Caritas(Trócaire) will have to start giving their Pacific-directed donations to something other than promoting greenhouse-gas-emissions-awareness on coral islands, important as that all may be

If the church-school system needed rebuilding on the island as a private sector Caritas(Trócaire) will have to start giving their Pacific-directed donations to something other than promoting greenhouse-gas-emissions-awareness on coral islands, important as that all may be I think that I would far rather have 10 Catholic Schools that were faithfully Catholic than 50 that were Catholic in name only. That may be naive in that running 10 schools without government aid, would be financially difficult. Also there is the danger that a spiteful government would impose laws on the educational content of the schools, whether public or private, forcing the schools to have a secular 'progressive' curriculum.
