I admit I have not been paying any attention to Irish politics for the last few years, my interest having shifted to Washington, ergo I know next to nothing about Varadkar. Gene Kerrigan appears to dislike him, however, which gives him prima facie credibility in my book:

The new taoiseach seems to a classical liberal insofar as he has an ideology. My mind fogged up when I heard him say he was moving beyond left and right.
I do like the "right" wing noises he makes on the economy but he will disapoint social conservatives on the abortion issue.
I was watching George Osborn the former Tory Chancellor of the exchequer on TV last weekend when he said he was liberal economically and socially. No mention of conservative , family or community values. Much of what critics of conservatism attack is really a neo liberal updating of a 19th century ideology.

Varadkar seems to be in the mould of the old PDs...free market social liberal. He made some socially conservative noises in the past, for instance that every child should have a mother and father, but then he went back on them. An opportunist, I think.

Mourning Ireland, I just corrected a minor misspelling of his name in your post and in the thread title, I hope that's OK.
As moderator I'm wondering if it's OK to correct obvious unintentional errors that don't affect the substance of the post and that I imagine the person posting would prefer corrected. Maybe it's better just not to interfere.

Leo is going to advocate for gay marriage in northern Ireland. I hope he is told to mind his own business. Will he ask the Saudis to open up a few churches for the non muslim workers in the Kingdom? Or raise his voice against the destruction of christianity in the middle east? We used to get annoyed when foreigners lectured us but we now positively relish it especially if it's about catholicism abortion or the lack of inclusion. I was aghast when Enda Kenny interfered in the Brexit referendum and actually physically canvassed for remain. The expression kiss of death comes to mind.
On the positive side Leo seems to have upset the "lets have 50% of women in everything"lobby.

Let's have women 50 per cent of everything...except marriage.

Leo Varadkar as Taoiseach makes me melancholy when I think about it.

Me too. I think he's very much a modernizer.

After Belfast and Canada it would appear Taoiseach Leo is going to lead the Moscow Pride march. After that its off to Tehran, Istanbul and the mother of all gay pride parties in Riyadh. If he has time and energy our Leo is also planning to let his hair down with the Ugandan and Zimbabwaian gay communities. President for life and Irish christian brother educated Dr Robert Mugabe is expected to advise Ireland on Zimbabwaian values and is going to recommend we bring our constitution in line with his.

The Irish Constitution was written by white, heterosexual, Christian men. Doesn't this violate some sort of UN charter?
