Two Irish bishops announced a planned Irish church synod which it will be hoped will "invigorate" the Irish church at a virtual association of catholic clergy meeting.
The synod idea , popular with Pope Francis and long part of Anglican church life has been promoted by those reform minded Catholics and viewed with some anxiety by the more conservative.
There is a need for practical reform of the structures of the church here which are simply too big for the numbers of practising catholics we now have. Perhaps the bishops could lead the way and agree to cut their numbers by 75%? Archbishop Martin often spoke of the need to down size churches and schools but failed to lead or to advocate sufficiently for this.
Of course the real reason we are having a synod is to push for a more liberal version of Irish Catholicism......

St Laserian's day (today) doesn't pass unnoticed by me,due to it being my father's birthday. A reminder that church discussions were once about liturgicsl orthodoxy (mostly Easter dates in his case). Less known locally-culted Donnán of Eigg (yesterday),said to be an Irish missionary martyred with others in the Hebrides, is a reminder of the foundations of old. Nobody, Irish or otherwise, needs to travel to distant places to form some continuity with the heroes of the past- the adventure is in keeping up some sort of ordinary, which is getting more and more extraordinary.
I here it will be a new spring time!
That must be the third or fourth spring/new Pentecost promised but not delivered in the last half century. I wonder when the penny will drop. To paraphrase CS Lewis we are in a long winter where it's never Christmas.
