"One evening in May 1719 there appeared at the Hotel Pellegrino in the Via Ugo Bassi a tired young girl of 16 with four Irish officers. Her only luggage was a petticoat lined with ermine, three chemises and a bag of brown cloth which contained the Crown Jewels of England. She was Clementina Sobieski granddaughter of the hero of Poland. The Crown Jewels had been sent to her by James Stuart as a betrothal present and the four Irish officers had just rescued her from prison in Innsbruck where she was being held by the Emperor who thought that if he could prevent the marriage he would be assisting the Protestant succession" (Morton, traveller in Italy)
With talk circulating about possible racism within the Windsor Family has there been mention of the discriminating laws that strike one off their succession list for marrying a Catholic? How about a fashionable apology?
"So began poor Clementina's frustrated life as would-be Queen of England. Romance has been kind to her and after her death there was a movement for her beatification, but the truth is that she became a tiresome and neurotic woman and must have been hard to live with"ibid
