There was a long and worthy discussion on Fennell in The Irish Catholics Forum, so I don't know how much of it is worth rehashing here: irishcatholics.proboards.com/thread/428/desmond-fennell?page=1&scrollTo=5551I've been trying to access Fennell's website but can't seem to get in. Is it just my ropey laptop or is anyone else having this problem? To summarise, I've only read bits and pieces of Fennell, and I am sure the criticisms of him as egotistical, over-general, immune to criticism etc are correct, but I am glad he exists!

I contributed to many of the criticisms on that thread but I do feel it is often too harsh on him. He is certainly a brave and outnumbered figure.

I suggest the Irish Catholics Forum should be referred to as The Other Place. :-)

Right, thanks. I'll give it a shot.
I would like to say that whatever one may fault DF's writings with, I really admire the way he walked the walk in the 60s and 70s. He went to the Gaeltacht, learned the language, got involved with the community, participated in establishing Irish radio and tv and was wholehearted about it all. Moral of the story being that with enough determination you can fight your own fight, regardless of the opinions of the majority.

A quick word to say I haven't been able to access it either. May have to get Chrome. I have gained a very great deal indeed from Fennell and would much rather celebrate his penetrating insights than dwell on his faults. We all have plenty of them and I tend to think of Fennell with a temperament not unlike Belloc's: fiery, passionate, yes very sure of himself. That temperament can irritate those of a different temperament, but that passion and surety may be necessary for such figures to stand out from the crowd whilst certain others - certainly people like me - may be less sure of themselves, but also less courageous.

Desmond Fennell will speak at the Central Catholic Library on 74 Merrion Square, Dublin on August 5th at 6pm. The topic of his talk shall be his newly published autobiography.

I missed it. I meant to travel down but I couldn't make it due to other commitments. If you hear of any further talks he is doing please mention them on this thread.

Fennell is a unique phenomenon. An intellectual with his own following.
