Empire magazine have released the results of their latest "hundred best movies" readers poll. Actually, they did so last month, but I only saw the cover this month. I don't read movie magazines anymore, but polls interest me. Here is the top ten: 1) The Godfather 2) The Empire Strikes Back 3) The Dark Knight 4) The Shawshank Redemption 5) Pulp Fiction 6) Goodfellas 7) Raiders of the Lost Ark 8) Jaws 9) Star Wars: A New Hope 10) The Fellowship of the Ring Citizen Kane, that historical topper of "best ever movie" lists, only reaches 46, while Casablanca only reaches 28. My favourite movie of all time, Groundhog Day, doesn't make the list at all, while the much inferior (in my view) Lost in Translation does. (Both star Bill Murray, of course.) It very much seems like a young male's list-- mostly action and gangster films. (Although I enjoy action films more now than I did when I was a young man....) They say that men are more disposed towards making these kind of lists. I don't know how true that is. I personally think Pulp Fiction is the greatest movie ever made (though it's not my favourite), so five is a very respectable position. Read the whole thing here.Hardly a surprise that there are no Irish movies on it.
