We cant have anything nice Examined up close, the badge is replete with Christian influence, being shaped like a cross and containing triquetra, a symbol denoting the holy Trinity. In the century that has passed since its adoption, Ireland has removed the constitutional importance of Catholicism and added that of same sex marriage. The state's culture and society have shifted under the influence of James Joyce and the bishop and the Nightie incident, among others. Ireland has also acknowledged excluding and hurting cohorts of women and children and progressed to welcoming diverse ethnicities among its citizens. All this has transformed both national and Garda identity. What is needed now is a badge to reflect that.... www.rte.ie/brainstorm/2022/0216/1281163-garda-siochana-badge-insignia-uniforms/

It's hard not to agree. Considering the role of the Gardai is now to harass and victimize Christians, as we saw during the lockdowns, it would seem hypocritical to have Christian imagery on the badge.

If you were given a choice would you keep or create a more generic badge? I would actually keep it. I'm temperamentally conservative and in favour of keeping things. For instance, I don't particularly like our flag or our national anthem but we've had them for a century now, so I think we should keep them. I feel the same way about RTE. Lots of conservatives would love to see it gone, or at least to lose its license fee revenue. I'd definitely like to see it escape from the grip of the PC, anti-Church, anti-nationalist agenda. But, even in the absence of that, I favour keeping it as it is-- institutionally. It's part of our history. This is the same reason I don't like to see statues pulled down.

I would also keep it but would change the flag to a historic or historically inspired flag. Defund RTE in general but am for large funding towards the Irish arts, language and culture. Private companies can make the majority of the rubbish that flows from RTE. I would not pull down all British statues but some I think are worth moving to Museums or gardens. Nelsons column should have become St Patricks column.

I would infinitely prefer Nelson's column to the Spire!
One benefit is that you could go up it and look out over Dublin.
Our flag is boring and too associated with nineteenth-century radicalism for my liking. But I would keep it for its historical associations.
I would like to see more Gaelic names like Taoiseach and Tánaiste used for our offices of state, etc. "Gaelic nomenclature" as our friend Connacht says.
