for one thing; our ancestors did not abandon the Irish language voluntarily except in a sense so narrow so as to define the substantive meaning out of the english language (or any other language which you could translate it into); lets use a thought experiment to prove it; if I pointed a gun at you and told you I would should you unless you give me your money; and you handed me your wallet as a result; would you agree if i later said you "voluntarily abandoned" your wallet to me? the answer is no. anyway; I admit legislation that openly favors Irish speakers could take many forms; ranging from an overt genocide of people who don't understand Irish (I do not think that should be done); to extra taxes payable by non speakers; and could include measures in between. some of the ideas are potentially laws that would disadvantage me; but I would still support them in many cases; because the cause of unding the damange done by foreign agression and imperialism matters more to me than the temporary convienences of some people (including myself in some cases). I actually have less hate for monoglot english speakers then i do irish people who understand multiple languages but do not include Irish as one of them.
ANYWAY THIS THREAD IS GETTING A BIT DERAILED; THERE ARE OTHER THREADS ABOUT THE IRISH LANGUAGE THAT CAN BE USED TO DISCUSS THE TOPIC OF RADICAL REVIVALISM OF THE LANGUAGE; THIS THREAD IS MEANT TO BE ABOUT DISASTEROUSLY IMPLEMENTED IDEAS THAT ARE GOOD TIN THEORY; LET'S RETURN TO DISCUSSING THAT.
sorry for the all caps statement above.

my reason for supporting the forcable imposition of Irish is that it solves the coordination problem in undoing language shit. see switching the everyday language in use is not something that can be done on a purely individual level; it requires many people to decide to do it at the same time; if I speak to someone in a language no one will reply to me in; the result is most likely not being understood. this is very tricky to get via simple agreement; if the government decides to persecute non speakers of irish; the coordination has now been done; and now there is a more overt cost to not speaking Irish; which gives people an incentive to do so. i acknowledge that it is ugly; but i see no better way to acheive the result; that is what i am thinking when i advocate that. hopefully even those who disagree with it can see where i am coming from then níl aon chead cainte agatsa anseo ach i nGaeilge amháin. Conas a n-oibríonn sé sin duitse?
