One of the uniquely Irish aspects of class is the insistence by some that we don't have a class system unlike those other people across the Irish sea. A few years back I pointed out to an Art History dollybird with a plummy accent the penchant for treating others who are perceived to have less money as inferior that I have observed over the years in these circles. She got immediately irritated, and bellowed with outrage " NO ONE is better than anyone else!" I replied, "You are 100% correct. The problem, however, is that people like you ignore that fact and act as if you are."

I think class is a human reality. The trick is, how do we temper it with a sense of noblesse oblige, public service, and social solidarity?
Christianity and nationalism were both ways to do that, and they are the things that these supposed egalitarians seem to hate the most.

As I tried to explain above, I am not objecting to the general notion of a class structure. I am, by contrast, talking specifically about the Dublin nouveau riche culture. I hope this clarifies. I'll call it the DNR culture going forward if I have reason to reference it.

Mourning Ireland, I wasn't thinking of you when I wrote that-- just a general observation about class. Sorry, I should have been clearer.

Morning Ireland the DNR culture as you call it is so frustrating. I know one couple that comes from a very working class background, have little or no breeding (as my mother would say )and act like they are superior to all as they have high paying jobs. Worst of all they are Champaign socialists aswell! Yet they Send their children to private schools, private tutors, have health insurance and work in the financial sector. NB: My mother is a bit of a snob and is never afraid to speak her mind to close friends and family. She said to my mother in law that I just want my now wife to be a baby making machine. The list is endless and hilarious.
