I felt it appropriate to make a post marking the 401st anniversary of the death of the last great defender of Gaelic culture against Tudor England: Hugh O'Neill.
I really believe O'Neill's rebellion was the last chance of saving and perpetuating a genuinely Gaelic culture. Nearly every major rebellion afterwards was influenced heavily by Enlightenment, universal notions, such as the United Irishmen, the Fenians in 1867, and 1916, none of which placed a major emphasis on Gaelic culture as such.
I am hoping to make a trip to Rome this summer, and one of my first ports of call will be O'Neill's grave monument in the San Pietro in Montorio.(I went there the last time I was in Rome, but it was a Sunday and the church was closed!)

I have a fondness for the great Earl who would make a wonderful subject for a blockbuster movie. Married up 5 times and a convert to and from Anglicanism back to catholicism and one of the great military leaders of his age and a thorn in the side of the virgin Queen he is one of the giants of our land.
His grave in Rome can be hard to access Even if the church is open the grave is often covered with a carpet unless a wedding has been held. A bribe to the sacristan may be necessary to view the grave slab . Somehow I think he would approve of such premodern skulduggery.
Hugh O Neill rest in peace .

It's on my list of things to do. I watched the final scene on you tube where there is a feast in Donegal castle. When you see the size of the castle in the film you would wonder how the English ever conquered Ireland.

I saw it in primary school. Very vague memories of it-- all I remember is him escaping from Dublin Castle. I remember it as quite good, though.
