Let's say you were in a bed and breakfast, having breakfast early in the morning. The only other person in the dining area is a guy sitting beside by himself looking very glum. He comes up to you and tells you he's going through a very difficult time and needs a hug. Would you hug him?

Yes. And ask him what's wrong. I am generally not the hugging a stranger type but he sounds like he is in distress.

You'd probably be better off asking questions and getting the person to tell you a bit about it,as a hug is only a quick-fix anyway. By the time they're finished they've usually given themselves some advice that they think has come from you. It was hypothetical? A real situation, but different: I was in a post office queue in Perth. In front of me was an elderly Aussie woman and in front of her a young Irish woman. They started talking..."my ancestors were from county etc... I've been to Ireland..." "it's cost us $X in fees just to live here...I like the way everyone over there thinks we're loaded... She'd like this/he'd like that(sent over)... I said try living in Perth" "I like you(Irish) people coming to live here, but some of-" Abrupt pause while they both turned to see if a Muslim might be standing in the queue behind them. They looked hard at me for two seconds and were obviously undecided. The rest of the conversation was hushed. Now,I don't want an answer, but can't help wondering: Perhaps I should have come out with "conas atá tu,cad is anam duit?"

Yes, a hypothetical situation.
I'm interested in social situations where the usual rules don't apply or don't tell us what to do.
I would hug him.
