This is an interesting lecture by Fr. Scalia, the son of the deceased American Supreme Court Judge. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysD6d8YSfpYEven though it's by a priest, I post it in the main forum because I don't think it's a subject only of interest to the religious. As far as I can tell, conservatives tend to have a range of attitudes to leisure. Some put a very high emphasis on the work ethic, while others think the work ethic has gone too far. Some think schools and universities should concentrate more on marketable skills, some think they should concentrate more on a liberal education. I'm interested in this as it relates to Ireland, too. I remember Gay Byrne of Late Late Show fame saying that Ireland had a jobs culture, not a work culture. That was in the early nineties. Perhaps things have changed. I'm quite interested in the theory of the Frankfurt School that, in a capitalist society, leisure becomes a continuation of work. It's funny that cooking shows and DIY shows are so prominent on the TV airwaves. Everything seems to be about some "project" or other. Having said that, the same thing couldn't be said about a lot of other entertainment, so I don't want to overreach.

The philosopher joseph pieper has a book on leisure which my reactionary friends tell me is one of the best explorations of leisure and culture. I haven't read it yet and he isn't an easy read generally .St Augustine said work was a comsequence of original sin which is a view i sympathise with at 6.15 on cold wet monday mornings.
