This film is one of the best examples I´ve ever seen in the art of sentiments. Could someone give a recommendation for an older classic that portrays one or more of the following: loneliness, ageing, friendship, empty cinemas, "magic" moments, city vs countryside, bittersweet memories?

I've moved this thread to the "culture" forum.
I don't like animated films, but I love all the themes you mentioned here! If you'd go for a documentary, "Life Itself", the documentary about the life of Roger Ebert, might be worth checking out. It explores most of those themes, except maybe loneliness and countryside vs. city.

Thanks for that title! I´ve ordered a mega box Hitchcock recently so hopes as soaring high for many cineastic hours of "magic".

There is a French film with English subtitles called “A Day in the Country” or approximately that. Encompasses many of the emotions you list. Portrays the bittersweet feelings of on aging artist dealing with the Sunday visit of his hopelessly bourgeoise son to his country home.

Thank you f´Man! From what could be read at imdb this is a film I´d indeed like to see. One reviewer talked about wistfulness and that´s exactly the kind of mood I was looking for in the story.
Another rather old-fashioned French film is called La Gloire de Mon Père and based on a novel by Marcel Pagnol. This was his childhood memoirs.
(Tonight, after reading that the film critic Roger Ebert´s favourite movie along Citizen Kane was La Dolce Vita, I´ve spent nearly 3 hours for a reprise of that one, which I don´t really like so much but - like the few other Fellini works seen - at least find impossible to disregard. Its end scene and several other parts poses questions on their life choices.)

Tomas,
Happy to oblige. I am not an avid movie buff but happened to see this one which seems to suit your interest.
