Can you be a conservative without wearing a hat? Which hat is most conservative? It would appear not. To answer your second question - A Crown/ Papal Triple Tiara. The common or non blue blood conservative could get away with a top hat. The Papal legate at the 1932 Eucharistic Congress was very confused by the Fianna Fail ministers in soft hats. He thought they were crypto-Bolsheviks. Jacob Rees Mogg looks rather dashing in a top hat.

Deerstalker and pipe. What more could you want! I daresay the pipe wouldn't quite past muster in any modern take of a (hatted or otherwise) character. There was minor news story this week concerning the theory that Russian hacks were at the back of criticism towards the appearance of Kelly Marie Tran in the new StarWars. (Perhaps we've got back to cold war days where Russia will be responsible for all and sundry?) I myself, despite having being fond of the Lando Calrissian character, have cynicism about a woman Jedi and an afro-stormtrooper, not to mention Samuel Jackson changing his lightsaber colour, but, it must be admitted, we can often see situations in real life where something- an art form,a dying trade,- would disappear except the reins have taken up by a woman, by an immigrant, by someone unexpected. Hats, conservatism, and ethnic Africans are not mutually exclusive. A photo was taken in 1885 in Africa of two White Fathers, one a bishop, with a catechism class. Twenty of the boys went on to be canonised. Of these- Sts Ponsiano Nngondwe, Charles Lwanga,Matia Mulumba, Akiteo Kiwauka,Gonzaga Gonza,Adolfu Ludigo,Yakobo Buuzabalyawo,Dionizi Ssebuggwawo, Bruno Ssrunkuma and Ambrozio Kibuuka, as well as the two French priests, have hats. Three or more of the canonised boys have the tops of their heads obscured. Another, older man canonized with the same group, had perhaps never been photographed, but is usually pictured with a hat. In other words- the hats have it. (saints of Uganda pray for us)

Apparently Archbishop Marcel Lebverve was against clergy wearing birettas which he thought were silly looking.

Can you be a conservative without wearing a hat? Which hat is most conservative? According to the New York Times, the answer to this would be Melania's pith-helmet
