I wouldn't expect or desire anyone to post their hypotheses about what did or didn't happen to this poor girl, but WHY does it fascinate so much? Is it only because her family were Vatican employees (if I can remember correctly citizens also)? The Right-wing claimed that her disappearance proved the presence of satanic coverns in the Vatican, the Left claimed that it proved the existence of a sexually frustrated pederasty-ring of clergy that included Cardinals. Exorcist Amorth believed it was both, but that it was the foreign ambassador staff rather than celebate priests that were responsible. But,at the end of the day, don't 15year olds go missing in all major cities? Perhaps it was the drama of the times: Mehmet Agca's attempt on John Paul's life, Marcinkos and the Vatican bank(involving a suicide or murder), people still surprised at the death of John Paul I and Italians probably still shocked at the murder of Aldo Mori, who happened to be a friend of Pope Paul. One Irish family seem to have been drawn into the Agca probes also, due to indirect connections with Mehmet, before somehow getting underneath the radar. I always feel a certain aesthetic about the drama of these times, young as I was (I wasn't aware of the papacy's existence any time before John Paul II). They've always seemed pivotal, even compared with the Gorbachev reforms or the Third Millenium, which came in rather undramatically. Possibly overemphasis on my part,a bit like consort-Queen Elizabeth, who often publicly claimed that husband George VI died young due to The War(during which he certainly showed great leadership quality, but still- courtiers winking and nudging at the fifty or so cigarettes he smoked daily)

George VI had never expected the pressures of ruling and it could be plausibly argued stress did bring about his premature demise. His now famous stammer shows a man ill at ease with public duties and speech making .Mind you his smoking habits can't have helped his lungs as you remark. Missing children do tap a nerve with the public especially as children have become fewer in most families. Allied with the fear of paedophilia and a tendency towards conspiracy theories we can see why these cases cause much speculation and occupy pages of media coverage. The Papacy of Pope Francis was meant to reform finance and moral corruption in the Vatican state as well as the wider church. Few would say that goal has been achieved. Francis has sheltered prominent clerics who have rather sordid pasts and a financial audit by Price Waterhouse and Cooper was scrapped before it completed its task. His financial supremo cardinal Pell is now in jail. The Orlandi case is another example of historical sleaze (and personal tragedy) that has emerged in recent times. It has nothing to do with Pope Francis directly but it adds to an atmosphere of a Vatican on the defensive for all the wrong reasons.

It has nothing to do with Pope Francis directly but it adds to an atmosphere of a Vatican on the defensive for all the wrong reasons. Pell's live-streamed appeal sounds like it went very much in his favour, but the three supreme Court judges are taking quite a while to make their decision (2 weeks recess included) From American historian Donald Spoto concerning Elizabeth snr: "their refusal to seek refuge outside the country, their obvious care for the homeless, the wounded, the families of the dead, the quiet strength they communicated by simply being present to the people, all this gained for them and for the Crown a tide of patriotic sentiment that outlasted the end of the war. I'm glad we've been bombed, said the Queen after Buckingham Palace was hit....just such sentiments propelled her and her husband to visit all the devasted centres of England " (cf decline and fall)
