St Francis never gave us the wonderful prayer Make me a channel of your peace .... The prayer Mrs Thatcher used on her arrival in Downing St to the fury of liberals and leftists. She had been handed the prayer by an aide a few minutes before and knew very little about this much loved medieval Italian saint.
I got into a frightful row once with a young "conservative" priest who accused me of heresy when I privately told him there is not a shred of historical proof Francis said this. No critical edition of his works includes this prayer.
Neither do they include the silly quote that Pope Francis unfortunately used in one of his aircraft speeches recently. "Preach the Gospel always and if necessary with words". St Francis loved preaching with words. He was ordained a deacon so he could preach in church but refused priestly ordination out of his profound humility and respect for that office. He preached in every town he went to. He went to preach to the Sultan to convert him and save his soul. In this he was following St Paul and those sent out by Christ to convert the world. Francis explicitly believed in the power of the word and would abhor this pathetic and insidious undermining of the need for and the power of good orthodox preaching and teaching.
Franciscans traditionally had a powerful pastoral mission of personal witness and preaching , the two were not in contradiction as the alleged quote implies.

I believe Archbishop Welby is going to chair the first UK citizens assembly which remainer types impressed by our experience in Ireland believe will help promote more right minded agendas and avoid dangerous ideas like Brexit. Preparing the people in advance for change is an important part of promoting radicalism.
I can't imagine nor would I want an Irish cleric heading an assembly here. Goes to show how things have changed in Ireland that a cleric heading anything secular is pretty impossible. .
Back to St Francis. He is one of those great figures like Newman who is nowadays seen as progressive when in fact he was hard to box into any current narrow political or church ideology. I think his radical Christlike identification is key to his attractiveness. Ignoring his loyalty to (a rather decadent at the time) church and his passion for the Christian gospel above all other faiths is really ignoring some of his central beliefs.

Mind you people who point out that a famous quote is in some way inaccurate can come across like the all knowing child in the playground who spreads the rumour that Santa does not exist.
Even though they are correct it upsets us emotionally, shatters a much loved belief and makes us want to shoot the messenger.Myths are powerful and shattering the idols is a risky occupation.

Even though they are correct it upsets us emotionally, shatters a much loved belief and makes us want to shoot the messenger.Myths are powerful and shattering the idols is a risky occupation. Indeed! Not so long ago, I heard somebody-- a very brainy woman and a schoolteacher-- repeating the legend that the American government invested millions of dollars into developing a "space pen", while the Soviets simply used a pencil. A good story, but it was a private company that developed the "space pen", and persuaded NASA to use it-- for the sake of the "as used by real astronauts" publicity. But I kept my mouth shut. Why ruin a good story?
