www.independent.ie/opinion/comment/ian-odoherty-euthanasia-will-be-next-big-cultural-battleground-and-its-time-we-faced-that-uncomfortable-reality-38748369.htmlThe above is the headline and corresponding opinion piece on today's online version of the Irish Independent. It's not surprising. Given the dismantling of the Irish constitution over the last decade it was clear this was the next big prize on the agenda that the biased media and powers that be will set their sights on. As soon as the abortion referendum results came in I told my wife to just wait and watch for the euthanasia train to soon roll into the station. I've noticed an increasing frequency of articles and online opinion polls on Irish news websites in the last few weeks on this issue and especially so since New Zealand announced their own referendum on this not so long ago. The drip-drip-drip manipulation of the public conscience has well and truly begun. Of course "progressive Ireland" cannot be seen to lag behind. There is something sadly inevitable about the move towards euthanasia especially in a society which does not value human life as sacred and uniquely gifted to us. I don't think we will see a referendum as there is no prohibition in the constitution although politicians may seek a referendum mandate to give themselves cover. A simple Dail majority could legalise the procedure. As our population ages I believe there will be abuses of whatever limited procedures are introduced at first. Rising health costs, reduced family networks and an unwillingness to be a burden will put terrible pressures for vulnerable sick old or simply isolated depressed people to end it all. Nazism originally began its genocide by targeting the incurable ill and handicapped in German hospitals. They didn't start with a blank sheet as German eugenicists had been pushing for euthanasia for "useless mouths" for years in democratic Weimar Germany. This was motivated by economic motives and a desire to elevate suffering. Those motives are good but they can never be absolute. The American writer Walker Percy reminded us that"compassion led to the gas chambers". Who knows what ghastly horrors lie in store for our tired worn out civilisation?
