When I would visit my aunt and uncle in a village just outside Limerick city, in childhood summers, I was always very struck by how people would wave at each other, even when passing in cars. It's very sad to think that is being lost. I think I've steeled myself for a long time against the idea that rural Ireland is a bastion of goodness and traditionalism, though. Certainly after the abortion referendum. It's may be lagging behind the big cities, but how far?
