The news that Sean O Rourke of RTE is standing down led me to reflect on which figures in Irish life are our National Treasures. Sean seems to be an affable fair gentleman who unlike many RTE journalists isn't an obvious left wing ideologue.
Many loved figures in Ireland are left wing ideologues unfortunately. Most arty types have made a display of their leftist virtue in recent times.
The late Seamus Heaney was an icon as was Gay Byrne. I am going to try to compose a list of non partisan National Treasures.
To start off there are some catholic religious who still attract much admiration; Fr Peter Mc Verry, Sister Consilio of Cuan Mhuire , Sr Stanislaus Kennedy and Brother Kevin OFM. Significantly 3 of them are involved in working with homelessness and Sr Consilio has been working in tough love addiction treatment for decades now.
Feel free to add.....

Bless them who works practically for the homeless and other poor.
