Happy to find several threads on various topics, from Hagia Sophia to normality, this is my own small chip in, verging on navel gaze. Hoping for others coming to the rescue!
Topic is Stoic attitudes. This ancient philosophy has always "had" something to it for me. It appears it has never entirely gone out of date, even if perhaps modified so often that the varieties of later ages would not be substantially in line with the original. What strikes me today is basically its "conservative" sense. Not only stubborn but also consistent, or firm rather than stubborn.
If there are not many adherents to Stoicism or semi-Stoicism around now in flesh and blood, yet least the historical ones (as well as some celestial ones) are not absent from the world in any absolute way. Even though true Stoics are far from true Christians there may be certain factors making them competent to "dialogue" with our Modernist world of materialist politics, on ethics especially? Could Christians and Stoics ever come together or learn from their respective perspective to reach the newagey materialist leaders? Will ancient philosophy help to solve some of today´s quandaries, and then break the spell of the Socialist-Capitalist stalemate?
Since both human beings and unhealhty economy already suffers worse than is needed, and apparently from much more than the latest viruses, the quest for remedies is also dependent on long term views and non-violence. If philosophy only could bring back moral up on the agenda, a lot of the major problems might be rather easily done with after all, without bloodshed and more obvious in view for the common good.
Please forgive if the post is too far-out and blurry, as usual.
