Cue rueful and bitter laughter.
"The Irish constitute a real nation, a true fatherland. They remained faithful to themselves, to their culture, their religion, to their personality....Ireland is not an Anglo-Saxon country. It has resisted the Anglo-Saxon pressure for centuries. It has preserved its personality" - De Gaulle, 1963.

Well, that's my point. He'd be horrified now.

Dr Samuel Grieg has a fascinating article on the Catholic world report website on the Faith of Dr Gaulle. He was much more personally devout than previous biographers have acknowledged and quoted Pascal , Augustine and the scriptures in his personal letters.
As president of an officially secular France he often referred to France as catholic but never received communion at official state masses. Well worth a read.

De Gaulle in Eirinn is a documentary in Irish which covers his visit to Ireland after his resignation in 1969 . Its on TG4 November 11 at 9.30pm. Normally they also put documentaries on their player. For those who miss first time around. Nice idea.

The TG4 documentary was excellent apart from a few minor flaws like excessive and unnecessary deedly deedly oirish music at the start.
Dr Gaulles maternal great grandmother wrote a pamphlet on Daniel O Connell called the Liberator and emphasised the strong personality and self belief of O Connell. One can see why De Gaulle admired O Connell .De Gaulle visited O Connells home in Kerry and those famous black and white photos of De Gaulle walking on the windswept beach were taken from nearby Derrynane strand . The shots of lush Kerry scenery were breath taking too. A place to put on your travel list.
De Gaulles Irish ancestors the Mc Cartins from Co. Down were Wild Geese exiles and De Gaulle himself referred to his Irish blood at a Mc Cartin dinner in Aras an Uachtarain. There was some rather predictable but misleading Brexit commentary at the end from Irish commentators. De Gaulle had a distinct view of the Common market and the need for states to maintain their individual sovereignty at the same time. Still a good documentary about a great Franco-Gael!
