I was going to post this in an older thread, but figured I'd make a new one. With the latest upheaval about Sarah Everard, I really can't help but wonder if feminists are actually stupid or if there really are so many people that are so heartless they would pretend to care just for a nice social media photo op. Maybe I have become too pessimistic over time, but when I see how blatantly stupid some of the things these people say are, it really makes you wonder.
A lot of it brings back memories of the George Hook faux-controversy, as a lot of the points being made are similar. I even looked at a tweet in that thread, and reading some of the comments on said tweet, it begs the question - are all these people just stupid, too lazy to look into the details themselves, or just that vile that they are happy to use someone's tragedy so they can virtue signal to the online community about how good they are? "Rape will stop happening when men stop raping women" is one I saw around, which is similar to something the Women's Council of Ireland tweeted out around the time of the Hook faux-controversy. Does this sound like someone who is actually trying to achieve something, or just some prat desperate for attention on Twitter?
Really, none of it makes sense. For e.g., why now are people suddenly angry? No disrespect meant towards Everard, obviously, but is she the first person this has happened to? Why now are they suddenly so disgusted? What about the Pakistani rape gangs which were covered up? They weren't scandalised then? And then the rhetoric as well. As I mentioned in the Hook thread, there are charlatans who are trying to blur the lines between "victim blaming" and having the audacity to suggest that maybe women could take personal responsibility for their safety and well-being - you know, like an adult. But no, apparently the onus isn't on women, but on men.
So, if a woman goes out late at night, gets completely drunk, and wanders around a shifty street all hours of the morning, it is inconceivable to suggest that said woman has the agency to take personal responsibility, yet as a man I do have to take responsibility if something bad happens to her, because the person who harmed her is more than likely a man. I am not being hyperbolic, this is literally the two-faced logic of these people. One Green MP even went so far as to suggest a 6pm curfew for me.
Has anyone else been keeping up with the story at all?
