One of the things that appalls me but which I grudgingly admire about the hard left is their sheer energy and constant activity.Despite their small levels of support they have derailed the state's water preservation policy and given us the "right to free water".
Street protests have become part of politics .I have noticed a nasty vicious streak in some of these protests. Last year I think anti fascists ran down Dublin streets trying to beat up anti emigrant speakers. Tomorrow a counter demonstration is planned at the Spire to clash with the national pro-life rally.Groups like the socialist workers who are usually present and whose tactics border on intimidation get ignored by the media.
Last night Paul Murphy TD sat smirking through various interviews and refused to accept he had intimidated Joan Burton and her advisor in Jobstown.Aquitted of false imprisonment he refused to accept the fact it is clearly unacceptable for a mob to detain anyone against their will in a frightening display of thuggery.
I believe the state messed up his prosecution which unfortunately has become more and more common . It also encourages these class warriors who relish conflict particularly when the state doesn't or won't fight back.

It was a really depressing outcome. I'd say it bodes ill for democracy, except I don't think these idiots will ever become more than a nuisance.
Regarding the water protests, I think they simply rode (and led) a wave of popular discontent on that one. However, the far left seems to be a constant factor in Irish politics. Not surprising when it seems the only ever-presents in the Dáil are Mick Wallace and Clare Daly.

I haven't followed the Jobstown protests that closely, but I was talking to a friend today whose opinions I respect who has. According to her, the verdict was correct in that the evidence (including video evidence) does not support the claim of false imprisonment. I'll shut up now since I haven't looked at any of this evidence myself.
According to my friend, there are elements of the far Left that are pushing back against globalisation - something unique in Irish politics. On this singular point I make common cause with these useful idiots, however misguided they are in most other respects.

False imprisonment is akin to kidnapping and carries a penalty up to life. A public order or a lesser offence would have been more likely to succeed but this approach was not used. The state's handling of this case was inept which is disturbing . The aquital of Sean Fitzpatrick the man who helped bankrupt Ireland is another example of the state messing up a case recently.
I can't see Paul Murphy allowing himself to be detained in a car surrounded by a mob screaming abuse for three hours in the name of legitimate protest. In court he tweeted regularly to his supporters about evidence and witnesses. The judge did not prevent this. Murphy is attempting to portray himself as a political victim here and seems to be succeeding.

I am happy, however, that he has stoked an anger in the people of RAPID areas who are tired of being used by middle-class limousine liberals who - "passionate advocates for social justice" that they are - swan into these areas (in which they and their own children would never live) from their expensive homes to pat-pat the residents on the head for voting to subsidize the social inclusion gravy train. "There, there, people of Jobstown. We are here to save you from poverty. We know what's best for you. But don't get out of line by getting angry about any of our policies. Sit, fetch, and obey your globalist masters. Be good little doggies or we will lower the boom."

I would love to live in a banana republic - good weather , cheap bananas and living outside the EU!
Your points on the conditions on the living conditions of people in Jobstown are very important. The economic crash has hurt many groups who have seen a real decline in living standards , a hugh increase in personal debt and are forced to rent permamently due to astronomical house prices.
A huge swathe of our population are getting by, barely. Allied with the problem of young male alienation highlighted on the computer gaming thread, great damage is being done to communities. People who cannot get a stake in society have nothing to lose. And we know where that can lead to.

Ireland's elitist limousine liberal Left is losing support in the RAPID areas in large part because the people are waking up and see (a) the discrepencies between what they promise and what they deliver and (b) the contrast between their self-indulgent, opulent, materialistic lifestyles and the struggles of the ordinary working people they claim to represent. Like Malachy I have lived in a RAPID area for many years, so I speak with first-hand knowledge. To take one example, Katherine Zappone, "passionate advocate for social justice," appeared on "Room to Improve," where she purchased an expensive extension on national television to her Brittas home, not to mention her involvement with the Jobstown trial and her "expenses kerfuffle" I've had some interesting conversations with people who previously supported Zappone quite vocally but now have a different opinion. It will be interesting to see what happens to her at the next election. In my view she is the quintessential limousine liberal.
