"But padre Pio had also some strain of anxiety in him." This phrase from a popular biography (I'm not sure of the word strain, could be vein or other word meaning characteristic?) has caught some imagination. Seeing today how so many becomes all too easy antagonistic, even angrily dismissive, when approaching other peoples views - perceived opponents they may only by necessity reluctantly struggle to meet - the inner need for calm and kindness and understand grows up to become paramount. To know then how even one of the major helpers of "our time" has suffered in emotions - in another way, by very other reason - can be humbling. No chaotic modernism can challenge the minds and hearts like a great Saint like Pio bearing witness to Love and Hope. Hopefully he prays for every sinner, old and new, to embark on the train to conversion.

Hopefully he prays for every sinner, old and new, to embark on the train to conversion. He and Maximillian Koble seem to have been cemented into the ordinary form liturgy as the two priests of the twentieth century whose feasts are particularly worth remembering. Even the three canonized post-Council popes have a generally optional memory, despite living through the same years of war, depression, communism and Nazism. Pio's life of extreme reparation has apparently a paramount importance. I was surprised to see the latter mentioned saint's face in a movie review recently. Polish language The Champion of Auschwitz is the latest production about boxer Tadeusz Pietryzkowski, who was forced to continue his career behind razor wire to amuse the nazi guard was apparently a strong defender of St Maximillian during his imprisonment there.
