We often carp about the Bidens, Pelosis, Blairs, Varadkers, Kennys....the list of so-called Catholic politicians, some worse, some better, who seem to more often than not find a million reasons not to vote in the direction of good Christian ethics. Perhaps one can forget to include a mention of the other type on the increasingly rare occasions when the opposite holds.
One aspect made a point of by some news services after the murder of Sir David Amess was his Catholicism and opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage,as well his objective attitude towards the EU. To say nothing, an indication of being unusually rounded, of his being a campaigner for animal rights (the photo of conservatively-dressed David holding an image of a fully-maned lion-"Ban Trophy Hunting Imports" is one to remember).
Perhaps the irony that his Muslim attacker might have shared more values (a much misused word today) with Amess than with most other Westminster politicians, excepting a few, mostly protestants, from Ulster, wasn't lost on some journalists. Nor the image of Saudis coming to the financial rescue of one of Britain's cultural assets- Newcastle FC- something that made several fans dress in traditional Middle Eastern costume to celebrate, just as a British-born man imbibed with a murderous aspect of Islam finds he has no qualms about killing the very gentleman who has made less concessions than most to the very secularism that one would suppose any devout Muslim should stand against.

One of the many stories I heard about him was his indifferent approach to a series of "urgent" calls from the then prime minister David Cameron . Amess was much more concerned about attending a local gardening show and meeting his constituents.
He also seemed to have a great sense of humour and concern for even his political opponents. We need more people like him in public life.
I listened to a former pro life Fianna Fail TD now a junior minister yesterday assuring us of the government's dedication to "reproductive health" in the new national maternity hospital. Sadly most catholic politicians are acting as midwives to a new future of more state sponsored death for the unborn ,the sick and those worn out by life.
