I must admit I was taken aback at the announcement Pope Francis plans to consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the virgin Mary on March 25th.
Already he has been criticised for not doing it properly according to the precise instructions our lady seems to have demanded, by some traddy types.
Francis has a genuine Marian piety and this surprising action may antagonise some Orthodox Christians which many western Marian enthusiasts tend to overlook or dismiss.
It will be interesting to see how this announcement is received in various quarters.

It will be interesting to see how this announcement is received in various quarters. As the church grows geographically it would become less and less likely that the entire episcopacy would recite a prayer simultaneously. I think people were always expecting a bit too much of it,almost like they want a destruction-of-the-ring-at-Mordor where armies of evil suddenly disappear. The Cold War as we knew it did eventually dissolve after John Paul's efforts, not that there can't be a fuller completion of the message to come for the current incarnation of the world order as inherited from the World Wars.

Is the act of consecrating both countries different to the act of consecrating Russia alone?

Is the act of consecrating both countries different to the act of consecrating Russia alone? Ukraine was still part of Czarist Russia in 1917 . I don't see any harm in what the pope is doing. He can't really not mention Ukrane by name either given the present war situation.

What did you all think of the consecration of Russia and Ukraine to the virgin Mary on March 25th? Did you do it as well?

I went to mass that evening but the priest didn't mention it. The Archbishop of Dublin did take part apparently in a parish church but not in the pro cathedral. I could find no information before the event for anyone who wanted to attend. I got the impression it was seen as a bit of an embarrassment by many clergy. Even the Francis fan club.

The Church in Ireland is so Lukewarm. "Either be hot or cold. If you are lukewarm, the Lord will spew you forth from His mouth. To love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength is all-consuming and all-encompassing. It is no lukewarm endeavor."

We hear so much about "celebrating diversity" but so little evidence of celebrating catholic things. I was just thinking what were the bishops who didn't join in actually doing that afternoon that was more important?
