Like everyone else,I might have thought that Lady Hussey's effort at conversation was a bit rude, perhaps expected in some vice-regal circles, but two comments by English journalists are worth the perspective:
"She found herself next to a woman with a Nigerian name who was dressed as an African. Not unnaturally she asked 'Where are you from?'...it turns out she was talking to one Ngozi Fulani. This woman was born Marlene Headley in Britain of Caribbean parents. But she chose to change her name to a Nigerian one,the Fulanis come from northern Nigeria. She wears her hair in long braids almost to the waist and dresses in African clothes. She claims she was violated by not being recognised as British born" (Fredrick Forsyth)
"As for for Prince William,he too lost no time in throwing godmummy under the nearest bus, referring in terms of racism. Ngozi Fulani, the woman at the centre of the storm, said she is proud of her African heritage and, quite properly, can emphasize it in her hair and dress. It was therefore absurd to take offence when Lady Susan showed an interest in that heritage,if you are proud of something you are happy to talk about it.
Instead Ms Fulani turned all melodramatic claiming to have been traumatized. Considering she runs a centre for people who have suffered the serious trauma of domestic abuse, that doesn't indicate much of a sense of proportion.
I gave a hollow laugh when the charity in question Sistah Space had the effrontery to say it wants to deal with the matter kindly when Ms Fulani denounced her 83 year old victim across press and media" (Ann Widdecombe)
It should also have been noted that former lady-in-waiting grew up in a very different England from today;whether or not she could have adapted her conversational protocols- what was your heritage, rather than where are you from- like her even-older boss remains discuss-able.
It's reported that part of the after-Final high-jinx of the Argentine football team was joking about the 'death' of Messi's rival Kylian Mbappe (I assume his Christian name is a French derivative of the Irish missionary saint who preached and was martyred in Europe?). Perhaps being Latino absolves them,I'd dare a Euro-NorthAmerican-Australian team to joke in the same way about an AfroFrenchman (with or without braids)
