Luis Rubiales had resigned as Spanish Football Chief over his unsolicited kiss to one of his women's champions, not sure how his mother's rosary vigil-hunger strike for her son's career has resulted. Needless to say, kissing a woman colleague on the mouth is hardly gentlemanly and, considering the excitement of the championship moment, I'm sure an apology-of-sorts would have hardly been giving in to feminism. It should however be asked: I've seen photos of winning male players, who perhaps usually wouldn't even hug another male, behave in ways that would be unthinkable during their usual heterosexual lives: kissing, grabbing posteriors, licking heads and faces... Can aspects of this story be seen in the light of situations such as female tennis players expecting equal money for three sets- a determination to be in traditionally male culture on equal footing, but somehow expecting an exemption from the side-effects that this culture will inevitably bring?

It seems like a ridiculous storm in a teacup. I mean, continentals are always kissing each other everywhere, anyway.
I've noticed that the women's World Cup got far more coverage in the media than public interest actually warranted. I didn't hear anyone talking about it in real life. I'm not saying women's sports shouldn't be supported and even given a bit of a push-- I think they should. But it was obvious there was an agenda at play.

I thought this title was a reference to the poetry collection written for young people by the new head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome in his younger days.

Yeah the one about the dark lady, or was it lassie, or laddie?? The dubious Art of Kiss lecturer might not be very popular with a reach out to these sporting ladies either? Doubts invade, media spotlights goes off like a censor robotic!

I'm not saying women's sports shouldn't be supported and even given a bit of a push-- I think they should. But it was obvious there was an agenda at play. Being hosted in Australia and New Zealand,it received huge attention in the region of course and Ireland seems to have played well, even if knocked out early. The 20-or-so main players (not sure how it works with interchange) on the Australian team were profiled in a paper one day: about three-quarters with female partners (the same seems to the case in women's Australian football, although I've noticed that a few of the GAA ladies imported for this have husbands and, at least one, several children.) To me the images actually made all the arguments about pushing women's sports seem a bit legless- almost like an unwitting admission that games like this ARE a male culture, whatever else they try to make it, and that it's not a chauvinistic attitude to suggest that a large percentage of the women who are involved are not representative of their gender.

It is incredible to think this office was held a few decades ago by Joseph Ratzinger one of the major respected and orthodox theologians of our age. Now we have a cheap snake oil pedalling sophist in charge.

There is a danger that you can become profoundly depressed or engaged by the stream of scandal from Rome and the silence of most shepherds. I agree with you we need to foster our inner lives and maintain an ever closer communion with Christ ever ancient ever new. I don't believe on the other hand it is tenable anymore to deny the radical heterodoxy that has become ever open and vocal and has papal toleration if not approval. We are in the midst of a tremendous struggle for the soul of the church.

Enjoy the poetry! Dante or Yeats it ain't. Unfortunately.
