just a random thing I have had on my mind for a while and decided to post about here; not particularly important. I wonder how many of you are familiar with "cló Gaelach"; a form of the alphabet that the Irish language historically used; in English it is sometimes called "Gaelic type" "Gaelic script" or "Irish character"; I have read that it was considered the standard form for written Irish as late as 1965; you have almost certainly seen it in corporate advertising; decorative inscriptions and the like (sometimes even ones in English use Gaelic script for that purpose; My grandma owned one of those); I really like the look of Gaelic type letters (my preferred English language term for it); it also has simpler capitalization then roman type; capital letters lack distinct shapes altogether they are just larger; the only letters that are not recognizable in Gaelic type are "T" and "G"; when it is used to write Irish lenited consonants are marked with a dot above them instead of a silent "h"; which I prefer; see the link at the bottom if you are unfamiliar with what I am talking about. note that I am not as serious about this as I am about other opinions I voice here; but a part of me would like to not only restore cló Gaelach as the main method of writing Irish; but even switch written hiberno-english to using gaelic type. interistingly converting regular roman type into gaelic type is easy; a computer can do it with a correctly programmed font; I have actually installed several of them myself; would have typed this message in one of those fonts; but this site is not programmed to support them. what do you think? www.gaelicmatters.com/gaelic-written-alphabet.html |

It's a nice idea but I'm afraid it's asking too much. It's hard enough to get people to read Gaelic in Roman script.

It's hard enough to get people to read Gaelic in Roman script. fair enough; and I think I was clear from the start that this was not a serious proposal; just a random thing that entered my head once; especially the idea of changing hiberno english to be mostly written in Gaelic type was a simple "it would be cool if this happened even though it is never going to and I would not serious work towards it myself" type thing; and anything that is a setback to the restoration of the Irish language should not seriously be proposed; restoring the language itself as the primary language of the Irish people comes first; indeed if you have read other things I have said; you should remember that I expressed the opinion that that cause should take priority over a lot of things many other supporters of restoration think go too far; so of course i do not want to seriously do anything that would make that harder |

I used to write amateur Irish script with calligraphy pens and Celtic knotwork for notices that needed doing here and there. When my life was less chaotic. Which seems a century ago. |
