Today we Irish go to two referenda that virtually no ordinary person has ever felt the need to call for. The Green Party in government has been one of the most radical forces in recent years. This is largely their idea as part of their programme for government.
The vote is largely symbolic and won't change the situation of stay at home mothers undermined by government tax policies pushed by current Tanaiste Micheal Martin. Coming up to Mother's day we will be removing the word Mother from the constitution. Interestingly the " mother at home" article was opposed by some feminists in 1937 including the famous Fianna Fail historian Dorothy Macardle. That vote was only passed 56.5% by the electorate.
Varadkar and many of his ministers have clearly framed these referenda in culture war terms. Keep the ongoing progressive bandwagon on the road. All of the big Political parties , the Irish Times , RTE and most state sponsered NGOs have advocated a Yes vote.
The de facto No leader has been Senator Michael Mc Dowell an old fashioned 19th century liberal who has a strong legal background. The Catholic bishops and Presbyterians issued critical letters but wisely took a back seat. This battle is the usual David versus Goliath struggle. A defeat for Yes tomorrow would be an enormous psychological defeat for the progressive establishment. There has been a strong No campaign devoid of much of the mad conspiracy element. I doubt much of the electorate will turn out . Tomorrow we shall see.
Why run these votes? One reason is that our establishment are clearly out of touch and imagine they ll benefit from a progressive tide that ushered in Gay Marriage and Abortion. There are fears that a new category of ill defined "durable relationships " will legally recognise foreign polygamous unions. Removing the word mother is symbolic but sinister in an age were many progressive types publically lie about biological motherhood and being a woman.
The title of this post refers to a line Eamonn De Valera allegedly made in his visionary St Patricks day speech in 1943. The word "Comely" was invented to describe Devs Maidens dancing at the crossroads. Similarly liberals falsely claim women are confined to the home in the Irish constitution. The actual wording talks about the state supporting the valuable work of mothers at home. In our neo capitalist consumer age that aspiration is heresy.

The actual wording talks about the state supporting the valuable work of mothers at home. In our neo capitalist consumer age that aspiration is heresy. The reason the government are so eager to pass this referendum, particularly "the women in the home" one, is because of a case taken to the Supreme court using that article in the constitution. This is the first of its kind and the judgement could lead to a huge boost for carers, but only if the referendum result is a no. www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/courts/2024/02/13/supreme-court-to-consider-issues-of-systemic-importance-for-carers-in-appeal-by-mother-of-severely-disabled-man/And the durable relationship is to make it easier for migrants to bring their families here. www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41344643.html"But if a person is here on a work permit, their family cannot join them until after the first year of employment and their spouse must apply for the same work permit. Mr Richmond said he will be speaking to Justice Minister Helen McEntee in a bid to change this process. He said the last thing he wants to do is issue a work permit for someone and then they have to go home after four months because they cannot bring their spouse or children here. " At the end of the day, it's all about cutting public spending on things that might help people in Ireland and push mass migration in order to fill jobs keep wages down. But by opening us up to bogus asylum seekers, this will cost more in the long run as these people have little interest in working, as we can see in other EU countries and they end up costing the host country more money. If they were any good , they would have no problem getting here legally.

It may be a factor but avoiding ruinous public ie tax payer funded expenditure is NOT a factor in Irish politics. Cormac Lucy has been pointing out the huge future pension bills , rising health costs as the population ages , the gigantic cost of environmental targets and added security costs re the war in Ukraine. We look like we are heading off a financial cliff edge on current trends. Most of this isn't even on the radar screen at present. Back to the referenda. Michael Mc Dowell has Tweeted tonight bookie odds that the referenda will be defeated approximately 60 to 40. That would be an absolutely shocking turnaround and largely due to himself. Fingers crossed🤞

Nail and head, Cato. I referred to this made up 'comely' bit when talking about this referendum with someone. I'm guessing the people most triggered by a caricature of DeValera, the people who see this as unchaining women from the kitchen sink, are young women in unstable jobs, who'll never be within an ass' roar of the property ladder. Instead of making it about housing, jobs, what we have is channelling of that anger and anxiety in to resounding woke non-issue. Cynical again to spend millions asking this nonsense instead of addressing bread and butter issues, and to put it on 'women's day' and suggest that this is some Great Leap Forward for women in Ireland. More language based chicanery. I'm not convinced it will pass, I think people are waking up to this con job, but I may be wrong.

It looks like a double No from the Irish electorate. This is a massive psychological blow to the Irish media and progressive political parties.
It doesn't look like there will be any dancing in Dublin Castle this evening.

I expected Yes to sqeak in with a point or two to spare. It's a surreal feeling.

The "women in the home" debate has been going on for a while now, but I believe when the court actions happened, this caused them to try rush it over the line.

This is a great result. The Government have no answer for their failure as the margin was so big that they can't blame "far-right" misinformation. They have been exposed as the liars they are and people aren't buying what they are shoveling.
