I love this discussion.
I sympathize with both Servantofthechief and Cato here. I'm personally satisfied with the word "conservative", for several reasons. One reason is that no word is ever going to be perfect and I think "conservative" manages to describe a constellation of overlapping viewpoints with reasonable accuracy. It's also the word that has been blessed by custom. However, I agree that, at this stage, I am more a restorationist than a conservative, as there is precious little left to conserve.
I'm also a conservative by temperament, in the sense Cato mentions-- I distrust revolutions and radicalism of every sort. The only revolution I can really endorse is a grassroots, non-violent revolution-- such as the Gaelic Revival and the rise of nationalism in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland. In fact, I would offer that to Cato as an example of a successful counter-revolution, though its success was limited.

I don't agree with the Alt Right about a lot of things but almost every criticism the Alt Right/Alt Lite/New Right/what have you has on traditional political conservatism is bang on the money. Agreed. As you might be able to tell, I have much more of an ear for the Alt Right and the Alt Lite than probably any other ideological stream at this moment. They have teeth, unlike traditional conservatism and (sorry to say it) even Catholic commentators. They are actually standing up to political correctness-- even Catholic commentators are simply begging for the right to be allowed to dissent, at least in private, at least for a little while longer. I like Bishop Robert Barron, but his interview with Dave Rubin was particularly shameful in this regard.

Mourningireland I didn't mention the zeal ot the Trumphites for a reason. He just makes me dizzy and I find all the activity and noise around hiring and firing of staff to be a dangerous and ultimately wasteful use of energy and time as well as being confusing and unimportant. And yet it is overshadowing his presidency from almost day one . His vices do seem at times to be overshadowing his undoubted virtues.
I do admire his resolve to defend Europe and the markets are favourable so far to his economic policies. He also seems unwilling to let chinese communists dictate to the rest of the world. He is sound on the supreme court too . I wish his mission every success but I fear his flaws will bring things down. I want to be wrong on this one believe me but I have serious doubts too.

The Trump revolution is a conservative movement that is much bigger than Trump the man, and a remarkably successful one at that. My point is that a very successful grassroots conservative movement is staring at us every day in the news. It's why the Leftist establishment - including its Irish wing - continues to go ballistic. As regards Trump's presidency, you seem to be getting some of your information about it second hand from the Leftist media. I get most of my information about the Trump administration unfiltered, meaning from listening to Trump himself and his administration (for example, Pence, Kellyanne Conway, and, lately, Stephen Miller and Sarah Sanders). I recommend RSBN, who broadcast the events unfiltered. President Trump is an imperfect but fearless man who is under 24x7 assault. He has made some mistakes, and is still finding out who in Washington he can trust. The forces around him want him to fail and will do everything in their power to bring him down. As the saying goes, "show me the man and I will show you the crime." Ireland has become lukewarm like Laodicea. We should all be praying daily for Trump to succeed, for if he fails America will fall, followed swiftly by the West.

I believe these two latest posts succintly sums up the fears and hopes of many conservatives. Thanks for straight comments, Cato and MourningIreland!

I don't like the slinging around of terms like "libtard" and "Feminazi".

I can agree with your sensibilities on that Maol, lets keep it classy folks. If nothing else, restraining yourselves from going to the obvious namecalls for our ideological opponents should incentivise you to be more creative in your denunciations. I personally like Black Pigeon Speaks method of viscerally describing exactly how repugnant he finds the progressive crowd in no uncertain terms but keeps every one of his videos absolutely clean of swear words. Though like every video of his sort on youtube, watch while scrolled down if you don't want to inadvertently catch a glimpse of some horror show he happens to be commenting on. Which given progressives, is an every day affair.

Conservatives do believe in objective standards of decency and respect for the human person and it is an important principle to keep debate civilised. I wonder should conservatives rebrand as "Unprogressives"?

The problem with conservatism is that in a multi-racial and multi-ethnic society it is doomed. It's also failed to conserve anything.

What was wrong with the interview? I never actually got to watch it.
Unless he actually did something in particular, I don't think there's anything wrong with appearing on someone's show just because the guy is homosexual.

He pretty much said he didn't care about gay marriage.
No, I don't think there's anything wrong with appearing on a gay person's show, and much of the interview was great, but he really backed away from condemning sexual immorality.

This has probably already been mentioned in this thread. A bad thing with labeling one selves a conservative is you can fall into the trap of thinking the system you are trying to conserve is worth saving.
For example an American conservative could be trying to conserve the American constitution. Yet not understand how Revolutionary and Liberal this is.(Good or Bad you decide)

The people behind the Soviet Union Generals Coup of 1991 were "conservatives" in this sense!
