Beachcomber has been banned for disregarding one of the very few rules of this forum, which is to avoid gratuitous nastiness towards any religion.

It's a pity trolls are so destructive as it is healthy to have a devil's advocate to challenge any consensus. I have noticed in discussions were people may be drinking there can be a tendency towards troll like activity where the conversation switches from topic to topic rapidly , the same points keep getting repeated and no attempt is made to answer objections.
I suspect many online trolls may be inebriated during "discussions".

I agree. If they were actually being provocative and devil's advocate in some kind of insightful way, it would be OK. But they are usually just boorish. Like that last guy, he just made the same point over and over and over, and then got tired of it and started throwing in some blasphemy.

A member called Padraigocuinn has been banned for gross disrespect towards the Pope and for generally behaving like a jerk in the space of three short posts.
I'm not even going to pretend to be scientific when it comes to who gets banned. If you act like a jerk and your posts don't add anything interesting or substantial you will get banned. If your posts will make other people not want to participate, in my judgement, you will get banned. If you want to assert rather than discuss, you will get banned. Thanks to everyone who comes here and makes constructive, polite, friendly contributions. I greatly appreciate it.

I have decided to ban the member unfortunately.
Although he was civil and made some good arguments, it became obvious that his motive was simply to make anti-conservative arguments in general. It might be considered that this is a good stimulus, but I found it became tiresome and irritating.
I've always said that anyone of any point of view can post here. You don't have to be conservative, since "conservatism" is such an elusive category anyway.
But I do expect non-conservatives (by which I mean, people who are not conservative by ANY definition) to come to the forum with an open mind, and an openness to conservative ideas, rather than a purely oppositionalist attitude.
I wouldn't hang around on a libertarian forum making collectivist or statist arguments, for instance. I wouldn't repeatedly post theistic arguments on an atheist forum. That's just being an ass.

I do like a an old excommunication/public execution occasionally. Well done.
I had a suspicion this individual is like the sort of fellow who sits at a bar stool and expounds learnedly at length with a pint in one hand but when you meet them outside the public house have no opinions whatsover.

Personally I think accusing him of being a troll is a tad harsh. I could see where he was coming form on his arguments, even if not agreeing with them. I suppose his last post was anti-religion/faith, but this is a Conservative forum which isn't necessarily hand-in-hand with pro-religion, though often times that is the case. Even though he might say things we disagree with, and the complex ways we try to make points may cause confusion and irritate, I think he was fairly respectful myself.

The point was that he took the anti-conservative line right across the board, not just on faith. Hard to see why you would do that on a conservative forum unless you were trying to stir things up and get a rise out of people. And that is the essence of trolling, even if it done in a civil tone.

I haven't banned anyone in ages. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms. These trolls have no staying power.

There have been a few new members joining the forum. Welcome!
One thing I like about this forum is that its archives are like a conservative lens through recent Irish social history. Long may it continue!

This very forum is mentioned in this video from Roger Buck! Indeed, he touches on so many subjects that would be of interest to members here that I don't know what heading to post it under...so I'll just post it here!

Today is the one-year anniversary of the banner at the top of the forum.
This is one of the benefits of keeping a diary.
Happy anniversary, Queen Maeve. I wish you were back with us!

I didn't even know that that desktop page existed until you mentioned it. I never realised who she was on the old £ note;I always thought it was just an allegorical figure.
