Like many English Catholics, he is an interesting character. His Catholicism came from his Irish-American granny, Beatrice Rees-Mogg (nee Warren): www.jacobreesmogg.com/presidential-elections/I hold out great hope for any politician who refers to "the Communist Gorbachev" and "murderous Mao Tse-Tung."

Jacob Rees-Mogg is a Breath of fresh air (The air may have been bottled). As a politician, he is truly a rarity. He is intelligent/well-educated, Practise his Faith and is unashamed of being Catholic, has good family values (He has six children), Polite, Loyal, very good rhetorical abilities and knows how to make fun of himself and people around him at the right time.
I am not sure what the future will hold for Mr Jacob Rees-Mogg in the Conservative Party. I think at best he could become a Minister. The Uk would have to massively change for a man such as Jacob Rees-Mogg to be PM.

Whatever chance he has about becoming Tory leader he would have zero chance at becoming his Irish counterpart which says something about how the land of saints and scholars has changed. There would be carefully organised campaigns and riots to prevent that happening. It is virtually bar a miracle impossible which is sad. He hasn't actually said he will repeal Gay marriage and the abortion laws as there is simply at the moment no majority support in parliament to do those things. I suspect he is pro hanging too but it's not going to happen either.

Whether Ireland or the UK will eventually become Stalinist states will be determined by one thing only: the people of those two countries. America was well on its way to this a few years ago but Round One began when a large contingent of the American people finally said "no." The emergence of Donald J. Trump was the unlikely catalyst for this transformation. Rees-Mogg could prove to be another such spanner. The Brexit vote demonstrated that the UK is not a closed book in this regard. I'm not sure about Ireland - the main reason I participate in this forum is to try to gauge what direction this country is headed in and whether I want to stay, or should start learning Polish or Hungarian (countries that, unlike Ireland, have tried Stalinism rather recently and found it wanting). The direction Ireland takes will be determined by two things only: the convictions of her people, and whether they possess the physical and moral courage of their ancestors.

If you want to know where all this is heading for anyone who becomes an enemy of the state, consider how quickly persecution against Christians turned very brutal so many times in Western history, including in recent history. The Irish think something like this could never happen in a society so affluent, cultured, and tolerant as theirs. They aren't the first Europeans to be so docile and so clueless.

In this detached postmodern Ireland, where everything exists for a laugh of course, we easily turn the lives of men and women like St. John Fisher of Cambridge, Oxonian Edmund Campion, St. Oliver Plunkett, Margaret Clitherow, and Philip and William Howard into a Monty Python skit. I look in awe at their examples and ask why the Irish Intelligentsia are so terrified of the Church.

I'm also in awe at their examples. (Especially those who didn't break under torture. I think I would take execution better than torture.)
