It's finally happened to me! I was in a group chat with some friends, discussing immigration. I recounted a story I had been told by a couple whose lives had been made hell by a group of Syrian immigrants who moved in across the road and started a drugs and stolen car racket. For merely reporting what I had been told, one of the group called me a racist and told me to never speak to them again. I am incredulous and mildly stunned....

It can be upsetting. I was told I "ooze white privilege from every pore" for suggesting that the extent of racism may be exaggerated.
The term is so elastic, it can really be applied to anyone for anything. Don't let it get to you! You're not a racist.

Thanks for the support! For the record, the guy who called me racist is from Belfast, and has spent his entire life on the dole, whilst simultaneously condemning capitalism, the British Empire, and so on while owning a property in southern France. The hypocrisy is mind-blowing.

It's funny in the work break room yesterday we had a conversation at lunch about Racism. It was interesting. The conversation came from a talk about sports. A soccer player was accused of calling another soccer player a "niger".
It was interesting to see different people's view on the subject. Some were very anti Political Correctness,didn't speak and some were shocked by such language.
One person on particular made me think. He was so appalled by using the word "Niger" and that some one should be able to say such a thing(still be in a job), yet the same person will say what ever they want about overweight people, Funny sectarian comments, and foul language.
People at the table all had an opinions but I got the feeling were mostly self censoring.

It does seem silly that a racial slur should be considered so much worse than any other slur.

The hypocrisy is mind-blowing. "Progressives" have a limited vocabulary of abusive terms that they use to silence people they don't like ; "extreme right wing , Fascist and Racist". Interestingly these are terms marxists have used to pillory anyone who deviates from their outlook since the 1930s. They have being crying wolf for so long and abusing anyone who dares question secular orthodoxies that they will be ill equipped if and when real racist fascist movements emerge. It sounds like your Belfast critic is a virtue signalling jerk. These guys are bullies who rather than engage with what is said throw a tantrum and start name calling. I wouldn't waste anytime worrying about a self regarding twit. |

In my work place I have several times had to point out to managers, a physical attack is worse than a racial slur when these events occur. In the post modern hierarchy of wickedness racism is the sin against the spirit that cannot be forgiven it would appear. |

The furthest level of absurdity this reached, in my experience, was when a very left-wing French lecturer, who was teaching us Camus's Outsider, said that she was opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances, but mentioned a racist murder as an example that strained her opposition to capital punishment. As though racism was worse than murder! Or racist murder was worse than non-racist murder! Fr. I'm being uncharitable in revealing the following but I am cheesed off, so I plead your indulgence.
My critic is one of those Europeans, Americans & Whites = Bad, Rest of the world, particularly Africans and Middle Easterners = Good.
I was utterly horrified when after the lorry attack in Nice that included the elderly and young children amongst its victims, he sent me an email the following day reveling in the deaths of "useless, bourgeois parasites" or some such. If I'd had more cop-on I would have ended it with him then.

I notice when a panel of Irish commentators are broadcasting an anti Brexit rant (sorry discussion) then it becomes perfectly acceptable to use all sorts of nasty labels about English Brexit voters. They are labelled stupid elderly xenophobic racist little Englanders etc.
The irony is lost on those occupying the dizzy moral highground over at Donnybrook that it is ok to trash working class white English native communities but it is racist to ask questions about potential terrorist threats or where we find housing resources to settle immigrants. It is claimed absurdly that Brexit =fascism.
The idea the Brexiteers are the heirs of fascism and the EU is the modern incarnation of the armed resistance to Hitler involves an act of imagination bordering on the deranged.The new European order between 1939-1945 was the vilest Fascist regime to date.
