I do think the Church needs to create a bit of distance between herself and politicians who do not share the faith or who are actively hostile to the Gospel. Minister Zappone for example was guest of honour at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. If a politician wants to send greetings to the diaspora he/she can use the methods everyone else does. Giving them a platform at the most sacred rite of our faith devalues and secularises the mass even further. I agree entirely. These people who are professionally critical of the Church know that are benefitting from the secular nature of our current culture and will have media backing. They are bullies. Like most bullies if you give them something, they will just ask you for more. Or, alternatively, the bully will eventually forget you as they have squeezed you to a pulp and now find you boring and no longer of any interest or challenge.
