As much as it pains me to say anything positive about Sinn Fein I am happy to hear they have upset the crude attempt by Fianna Fail , Fine Gael and Labour to shoo Michael D Higgins back into the presidency without an election. Fianna Fail miscalculated on this one. If Sinn Fein come up with a suitable nationalist candidate it is unlikely Fianna Fail voters will support Michael D Higgins.
Lest we forget our beloved president promised us he wouldn't run for a third term. I wonder will those tough impartial media people in RTE and the Irish Toimes grill him on this broken promise? Perhaps we should abolish the ability of a president to nominate herself for an uncontested second term altogether or reduce the terms of office.
Mary Lou is being cunning here in distancing herself from old politics. Her candidate if unconnected with the IRA , could give Ireland's greatest unappreciated poet a serious run for his various pensions.

Michael D. Higgins pretty much fulfils my requirements for a President...he's vaguely intellectual/cultural. Douglas Hyde was our first President and I think he was a good template for all future Presidents.
Of course, Higgins is a cultural Marxist, so if anyone who WASN'T a cultural Marxist opposed him, I would cheer them. Hard to see that coming from Sinn Féin, though.

Yes it will be voting for the least objectionable candidate or spoiling the ballot with my personal affectionate Ode to il presidente .
I read somewhere recently that Douglas Hyde had a rather unorthodox approach to christianity so maybe it's not that unusual to have alternative minded, but also firmly establishment, senior citizens living in luxury in the Phoenix park

I would definitely vote for that.

Zimbabwe reportedly discovered that the Mugabe era electoral role has some 150 year old citizens. Count ones blessings for the fairness in developed nations. Has a sitting president ever lost the Irish presidency? Seeing that so many have been FiannaFail candidates I wouldn't have thought so? Interest has apparently been registered by an independent Joan Freeman, seemingly the founder of Pieta House. PH has a group of supporters in Perth where they hold early morning fund-raising jogs around picturesque Swan River. The swans, when they're around, being black ones.

De Valera just barely got a second term as President....50.5 per cent to 45.5 per cent, against Tom O'Higgins of Fine Gael. Quite surprised when I learned that.
