I know we have been discussing globalisation on various threads but I think the following under reported remarks of Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney merit a seperate post.
Quoted by Cormac Lucey in the business section of today's Sunday Times, Coveney said "I happen to be someone who is quite liberal on immigration. We estimate, over the next 20 years, the population of Ireland will grow by an extra million people. Linked to that estimate , is that half of that number won't have been born in Ireland. I think that will be a really good thing for Irish society".
Thise remarks are truly incredible. Could we ever imagine any previous leader of Ireland - Collins, Cosgrave ,De Valera , Haughey etc utter those glib ,anti patriotic, out of touch words?
And what is frightening it's not news. When you think of the false manufactured outrage we hear everyday from various oppressed victims the lack of any reaction to this is simply startling.

As far as I can tell the tradition of Irish nationalism has little to say about immigration. The thought hardly seemed to have occurred to them.

As far as I can tell the tradition of Irish nationalism has little to say about immigration. The thought hardly seemed to have occurred to them. Yes indeed. The movement was the other way for most of our history. When you consider the Ulster plantation in particular was the cause of much destruction and conflict I find it hard to envisage previous generations of patriots welcoming an even bigger influx of people from all over the planet. The prospect was simply unbelievable.
