A great Irishman, a great conservative, and very often the figure to whom traditionalist conservatives appeal as the fountainhead of their ideas. For instance, Peter Hitchens usually describes himself as a Burkean conservative. I don't know if Roger Scruton calls himself a Burkean, but he would seem to fit the bill perfectly. And then there is the Burkean online journal in Ireland.
But who reads him?
I don't! Today is my last day of work before Christmas and I've been taking Christmas reading from the shelves. I did look at the Burke shelves, but the volumes of his speeches are so big and intimidating...I like what I've heard of his ideas second-hand, but always second-hand...
I thought he deserved a thread of his own!

I thought he deserved a thread of his own! I dipped into his Reflections during the Summer. He is hard work but anything worth while usually is. There was a section of the Reflections on the prose section on the Inter Cert English course for many years. I doubt modern Irish youngsters are exposed to him nowadays. I think Joyce studied it as a boy too . There are references in Ulysses to Marie Antonette and those famous swords leaping from their scabbards to defend her honour. Conor Cruise O Brien's The Great Melody is a sympathetic biography which emphasises Burke's sympathy for Irish Catholics. Perhaps I might finish it too in 2019. Burke is one of the intellectual and political giants of our land.
