What is happening now seems to me almost exactly similar to the disastrous period when we jettisoned the Irish language, which was actually a relatively short period. The Great Silence by Seán de Fraine chronicles this; I forget the exact time-frame. What is heartbreaking is that, all English persecution aside, IRISH parents and schoolteachers suppressed the Irish language very actively and consciously. The loss was incalculable. I fear we are seeing the same thing now in terms of losing our very existence as a nation.

I fear we are seeing the same thing now in terms of losing our very existence as a nation. At least they were faced with a choice between physical survival or death. The language, albeit unfairly, was a convenient scapegoat for the disaster that was the Great Hunger. Other practices like the sub dividing of land ceased abruptly too in favour of the eldest son inheriting often in late middle age. The other siblings either enigrated or stayed as involuntary celibates. There was much individual sacrifice and suffering so the community would survive. We however are abandoning nationality to have a higher standard of living and even more luxury than we already have. The decision to allow a huge influx of outsiders is the most radical and ill thought out scheme in our history.

I was reading up on the National Party website today and its nine principles. Although no list can include everything I noticed no mention of the family, (individual rights are mentioned) , the Irish language or Irish culture more generally. Perhaps it is assumed these things are a given.
Populists do tap into legitimate grievances that are ignored by the mainstream media and political establishment but it seems less certain about what it is for or what it seeks to positively promote.

Exactly how I feel. The goals of the Gaelic Revival were unrealistic in the extreme. But if you don't shoot for the moon, you won't even get out the garden gate.
