Recently the US president cancelled a US naval air strike on Iranian missile and radar bases in retaliation for the shooting down by Iran of a $100 million American global hawk spy drone. Trump was briefed by his advisors that 100 odd Iranians would be likely to die even if all attempts were made to avoid targeting people rather than hardware. He ordered the strikes to stop ten minutes before they took off based on an argument the cost in human life would be non proportionate.
Few have commented on this significant act of self restraint by the US president. Trump may be petulant and petty but internationally he has kept his word by refusing to start new wars. This is not based on any idealistic vision however. Trump views the world through the prism of a business man. America's recent middle eastern wars have been ruinously expensive. Even worse they have been failures which have weakened American resolve , her finances and emboldened her enemies.
When Israel strikes back at her enemies the normal mainstream criticism from arm chair critics is the "non proportional" nature of the response. Few of them have praised Trump for exercising this restraint they advocate.
True he has ended the ISIS caliphate, but this operation was begun by President Obama and was mainly fought by local forces on the ground.Few can argue that crushing this vile regime was unjust.
When Trump was elected many predicted global meltdown and conflict. I could never understand how a man allegedly in the pay of Russia and on good terms with China and North Korea would start a war with them. Trump views international relations as primarily economic. This may be simplistic but it is roughly speaking correct. Causing upset in NATO because members prefer to rely on the USA rather than spend on their own defences also seems to have worked. Rich Europe should not be subsidised by American tax payers.
Trump may love to stir up things at home but internationally we may be experiencing a Pax Americana.
