An embarrassing but sadly predictable revelation from Dail Eireann indicates numerous prominent TDs have been electronically voting for absent colleagues in parliamentary votes. Government ministers including Katherine Zappone and the Taoiseach have admitted to cheating in this way.
The integrity of the actual voting system has been compromised. There is something deeply rotten about this Dail and it's smug self entitled culture.
Some may remember the crazy plans of Bertie Ahern to introduce electronic voting for general elections. He mocked paper and pencil elections forgetting elections are too important to be left to politicians and the technology they approve. Compromising the mechanics of democracy is a step we need to avoid at all costs. That humble pencil and paper helps keep our masters honest. Well relatively so.
Every tin pot dictator would love the speed and efficiency of a computer telling us the election results in 5.47 seconds. That technology thankfully failed and the tax payer ended up paying millions to store the high tech machines which ended up being sold at loss for scrap. We don't trust politicians for very good reasons.
