This election day I migrated to the most conservative county in Ireland to vote. As I entered the polling booth this morning I was pleasantly suprised to see a queue. Not like the first post apartheid South African election but a queue nevertheless. Perhaps canny Donegal people want go avoid the predicted Atlantic storm Ciara and plan to spend the afternoon watching rugby and football.
Unusually I was spoilt for choice in having two candidates I could give my number one to. There is a good Aontu candidate and a larger than life Independent nationalist . The famous Peter Casey of the last presidential election is also running here , having a holiday home in Inishowen. I gave him my last preference as he annoys the establishment but he did back Repeal.
I didn't give any preference to Sinn Fein , Fianna Fail, Labour or Fine Gael. Pat the Cope is a pro life Fianna Failer and an all round gentleman. I gave him a high preference which may help him over the line.
Pearse Doherty of Sinn Fein is one of the golden boys of the movement. Untainted by an IRA past he would in my opinion have been a better leader than ex Fianna Failer Mary Lou. Doherty is tipped to top the poll here and the Sinn Fein vote may outnumber Fianna Fail and Fine Gael combined. That is ground breaking stuff. People here feel abandoned by a Dublin centred government and want to rebel unfortunately they are turning towards an even darker force in Irish political life. A storm is coming. We will know tomorrow how strong it will be.
Several prominent female journalists are lauding the anticipated Green (Republican version) Gale in today's papers. Strange about the much predicted Green surge that was unwisely and widely forecast. Those articulate ladies say it is unfair to be mentioning things in the past like 2000 odd murders ,many of whom were fellow catholics, torture gangs , bodies buried secretly in bogs , child sex abuse at high levels in the party, a Stalinist party discipline etc etc. This is the party of change. As we all know all change is good.
Strange how no one on the left or any other normal position advocates Germans put the past behind them and give neo Nazis a chance to change Germany. Why don't we ask the Germans to forget and move on. If the young voters of Ireland do flock to Sinn Fein as predicted they 'll be like the disillusioned in Germany seeking change in 1933.
Any way the rain and wind has arrived outside. Time to put the kettle on.
