John Hume was not a conservative in the traditional sense but he championed causes dear to conservative hearts ; He always opposed political violence (real life 100 % fascism) , advocated practical incremental reform, loved his local Derry community and was a believer in practical Christianity and political cooperation.
He in many ways was a believer in the original post World War vision of the European project and saw great merit in its peacemaking potential. It must have pained him to see political creeps and rivals claim to have been peacemakers when in fact their blood stained hands had pulled triggers and pressed bomb switches ,or rather persuaded others to carry out these dreadful deeds back in the dark days of horror and hatred.
Hume wasn't perfect but he had the stuff of greatness about him. He gave away his nobel prize money to charity and lived out his final days blighted by dementia cared for by his loving wife. Blessed are the peacemakers they shall be called sons of God.

I switched on the RTE recording of the funeral today just for a few seconds. One of John Hume's granddaughters was doing a prayer of the faithful, I think. The RTE lady said "Oh that's Una (?) - her sister Aine is a GP in Belfast". Had to laugh - some things never change.

I watched a recording of the 2019 documentary Lost Lives based on the book of the same name that chronicles every one of the 3700 plus names that died directly through the political violence that John Hume did so much to combat.
It's profoundly moving, using the text of the book, picking out representative cases and conveys the waste of precious innocent ordinary lives and the overwhelming grief of those left behind. Archive footage is used, some never shown on the news due to its shocking content. It is mixed with some stunningly beautiful scenes of the Irish countryside , urban scenes , abandoned buildings etc with a powerful soundtrack.
This film shows why Humes crusade for peace was so necessary and how inhuman and unnecessary the conflict was despite the claims of those who continue the cult of worshiping at the shrine of dead killers.
What shocked me at the end was the list of the dead scrolled up at the end of the film. The list doesn't end with the signing of the Good Friday accord. Almost every year since has seen deaths including 2019 with the last death to date - Lyra Mc Kee shot in Derry by " real Republicans".
