It seems that with her latest behaviour Gemma is now alienating even alternative media venues where she may have previously found some support. "To the extent that yours truly has anything to say about this whole sorry affair, it’s this: whatever else Gemma O’Doherty may be, her persistent appearance on videos yelling and screaming at Gardai, members of the public, and others in authority isn’t a mark of rebellion, or the behaviour of a serious person. If her own behaviour was replicated by teenagers outside a pub, shouting abuse at a public servant, this website, and our readers, would condemn it without question, and believe that the Gardai were right to crack down on her." Many of those who detest Gemma O Doherty have regularly branded her as mentally ill. Yet they delight in posting nasty personalised comments about her . I would have hoped the days of ridiculing the mentally ill were long past. She gives as good as she gets but I am dismayed at the mutual outpouring of vile nastiness. This poison is polluting public debate and discussion and does I fear affect people's mental well being.
During Covid I have spend probably too much time reading Twitter comments. I note a large group of non Conservative Irish Tweeters still have their Together for Yes photos up. I wonder will the Repeal victory become a liberal version of the battle of the Boyne, something that they celebrate for all time to remind the defeated of their inferior status? They also usually have a Love is Love slogan or a quote about togetherness and diversity. Their actual tweets are generally rather unloving, somewhat intolerant and dogmatic towards anyone who has a different ideology from theirs. Strange.
